Happy New Year! Welcome to a nation with three Mika songs in its Top 40!

[Poll #1117595]

*officially a 2007 hit.]

(Because I still don't have home interwobs I haven't had the time to properly go through the 2007 lists - it may happen this weekend though!)

Cor, I've heard all of these before today!

Basshunter - RLY not impressed with this schaffle-bosh. I keep expecting there to be Mullah Resmant's Iranian ladies chiming in any second BUT NO.

Britters - I think this is probably my fourth least-favourite track on the album but obv it's still awesome. The prisoner-shackle 'clink' noise is so great! And the way she says 'Phillipines'. (Tick of course)

Mika - give it up dude. 1 whole year's worth of plugging one album = only works if you're Fergie. No tick.

Booty Luv - great stuff, shameless hands-in-the-air handbag. Woo!

White Stripes - [livejournal.com profile] mrs_leroy_brown played me this at New Year and it's very good! Super-comedy video as well.

The White Stripes song is ARGHGHGH terrible. It makes me want to hit things. Surely an early contender for most irritating song of the year?

I realise this is probably why poptimists people like it as it makes it more pop or something but dear oh dear, I'll go back into my box now.

Dude you ARE a poptimist whether you like it or not! Your opinion counts just as much as everyone else's. :)

probably my fourth least-favourite track on the album

You know you've listened to the same album too many times when...

That White Stripes track is k-annoying.

i'm rly not feeling the booty luv love, i mean it's ok and all, but not perhaps as exciting as i was led to believe. i wonder if popjustice are maybe going for a "here's an PROPER GROUP making dancy dancy music, thus we will have ppl to interview/show pictures of/eventually take the piss out of" angle...

yeah that's exactly what they're going for. but Booty Luv productions are mostly decent enough if generic as fvck 00s handbag efforts. there's a rockier 'Ryden Edit' of this on the album i notice.

does ANYONE think Booty Luv are exciting? I mean they're not horrendous but at the Pjustice prize the consensus was "6/10 all round, well done ladies, next please". I'm kind of impressed that they've managed to build a career out of what they do though.

I'm not sure they're "exciting" but they are fun. I bought their album in the week of release and have no regrets about the whole thing; it's not unmitigated genius but it's one of those things that's good for listening to when you're drunk/about to go out/desperately trying to finish a three-day-late essay or something.

> I'm not sure they're "exciting" but they are fun

YES. They look like they're having a brilliant time! I would like to be in Booty Luv (as opposed to say, Girls Aloud/Sugababes, who have to look SERIOUS and POUT quite a lot of the time).

Possibly that is the appeal- they look like totally normal people, in a way Girls Aloud don't (they are much scarier than normal people) whose hairbrush karaoke got released by accident or something.

i ticked the Mika by pretending it was Scissor Sisters 'Comfortably Numb'

Britney yes obv. Also, repeated meltdowns in front of the world's paparazzi officially pwn all yr lame PR strategies. I love the way she abandons the entire concept of scansion midway through. I hope she doesn't die, there are no even remotely appropriate posthumous singles on the album.

White Stripes surprisingly v good! Kind of...mariachi? I was drunk when I watched this, the video is funny, but not in an obnoxious comedy kind of way.

Basshunter - the return of happy hardcore! Except crap.

Booty Luv - as above but 6/10 doesn't cut it in terms of ticks.

Mika - god I hate him so much.

This 'Basshunter == return of happy hardcore' meme must be stopped! First of all, Basshunter are barely HH; secondly, it's not like HH has gone anywhere anyway.

I was also drunk when I watched the White Stripes video. Hahaha Jack falls in love with the bull!

Basshunter - hrrrrrrrrn thought I'd heard last of this. Actually I probably have. NO TICK.
Britney - duh, easiest tick in years.
Mika - hate him to death, hate hate hate hate hate hate, but I do think this song is good. NOTE: only song on his album I would even consider a marginal tick, but, sadly, it's a full tick.
Booty Luv - second easiest tick in years
White Stripes - getting progressively uglier and boringer, sorry. I'm sure they're still v. important but I played this in between two old WS songs, the obviously ticky "7 Nation Army" and the marginal non-ticky "Denial Twist" and it sounded leagues worse than both, so NO TICK.

unexciting 2008

Basshunter- Have not heard this, take it that I shouldn't bother.

Britney- Hurrah this is my favourite song off her album, possibly my favourite thing she's ever done. I know it'll probably date rather badly but nom nom nom, from the chain-clinks to the synthesised sex-sighs, to the command-question at the heart of it all ('you want a piece of me' or 'you want a piece of me?' the question mark seems to disappear and reappear at will, entirely appropriately) to the fact it sounds like an advert. There's also a synth noise in there somewhere that I find extremely appealling but can't quite think how to describe.

Horribly appropriate, of course, too. :(

Mika- I like this one a lot actually. The Cutting Crew sample is ace and it sounds nicely wintry.

Booty Luv- the bassline on this is ace. I'm not totally sure why I like Booty Luv so much but there it is.

You most likely have heard the Basshunter but with different words in a different language, as it was part of the Chart Championship Series and won [livejournal.com profile] byebyepride three points on the final day, saving him from relegation. Other version is better than this new one in Engrish, but this is pretty enough.

'Conquest' might be my favourite thing the White Stripes have ever done - I might be alone in this regard.

guess who think it's their worst single to date ;)

"Conquest" is a bad choice for a single. Works much better as an alBUM track, I think, where it's 'novelty record' features grate far less.

Icky Thump is another fine rock LP from ver Stripes, though. The Meg-Jack chemistry is still there and Jack largely stays away from the piano this time, thank goodness.

Ticky Thump?

Oh it's nowhere near the best stuff on White Blood Cells!

(NB I cannot remember which the best stuff was, but I remember really liking the album)

I have heard 2 of these and voted for both. I will listen to the others during lunch break/after work.

Britney - Pretty obvious tick even though I think it's really overrated (it's probably not in my top half of favorite tracks on Blackout).

Mika - By a huge margin his best song. Another fairly comfortable tick, even if he is a knobhead (and I don't have any particular reason to hate Mika, I just dislike the other songs of his that I have heard)

Futher reflection reveals that "Piece of Me" is, in fact, my 5th favorite song on the album so it does sneak into the top half.

I think it's total genius and my favourite song on the album, except it's actually my fourth favourite after 'Freakshow', 'Hot As Ice' and 'Toy Soldier'. Obvious choice of single though. If Britney stays mad the next two singles should be 'Freakshow' and 'Hot As Ice', if she gets better they should be 'Toy Soldier' and 'Break The Ice'.

My god, I ticked all five!

Basshunter "Now You're Gone." Had way more of a lilt when it was in Swedish and confusing people as to whether it was Hilary Duff pretending to be a robot a boat pretending to be a bot or a bot pretending to be a human. This got three points for [livejournal.com profile] byebyepride in the Chart Championships, though all I could think to say at the time was "A really sweet voice." Easy tick, even if I'm more down with the bots than with this version.

Britney "Piece Of Me." Tick.

Mika "Relax Take It Easy." I just died in your arms tonight, basically, a resemblance that [livejournal.com profile] piratemoggy pointed out eons ago. Sounds excellent, no matter Mika's other transgressions.

Booty Luv "Some Kinda Rush." Track is adequate. I said something about this last week, though I forget what.

White Stripes "Conquest." I want to think Jack is getting away with this; a man whose range can't possibly scale these heights without sounding ridiculous tries to scale the heights and sounds ridiculous. But he draws out the desperation and makes you aware of the heights in a way that Patti Page never could. As I said, I think he pulls this off, or pulls something off, though this definitely has moments where it's painful for me to listen.

Really disappointed that the fun/goofy lyrics of the Swedish Basshunter version (subtitled video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX79tgB2PVk)) have been completely banished for the nothingness of this.
