Over on ilX I decided not to continue Rolling Teenpop into 2008; I left the decision as to what to do to others; three relevant threads have emerged:

Rolling UK Pop/Chart/"They're The New Scouting For Girls!!!" Thread 2008, started by skillextric and featuring stevem78 and the long-lost-to-ilX umlauts as well as, actual, you know, commentary on the music and stuff.

rolling US charts 2008/talk about "pop" here, which has had posts by justfanoe and the admirable Tim F. and some other lightbulbs of various degrees of brightness.

Rolling Debutante Bubblegum Teenpop Thread 2008, started by mcatzilut and featuring justfanoe and no one else so far, possibly because Mordy forgot to link it from the old thread.

I will post on the Rolling US Charts thread the same as I did last year, to discuss the specific positions of songs on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. This is nerdy statistical stuff that interests me. I'll talk about the actual music, etc. on the Rolling Bubblegum/Teenpop thread if that takes off.

I half considered posting on the r&b and pop threads, just because I'm listening to a load of stuff I want to talk about right now, but I think on balance not; once I get back to work I'll really have no time, and the rest of ilx is still too horrifying.

Oh I did read it. (Parenthetically, one of the reasons I nearly went back today is because you and Tim F insist on still being there, and if that's the case I have to at least check inevery so often even if the rest of the posters give me an aneurysm.) (You should both stop being there, is what I'm saying.)

Anyway I actually feel what you're saying on Gnash...I checked out Adele's single, and I don't hate it like I hate Gnash, but it just feels so...inevitable. Not in a monolithic monster pop hit way, in a ticks-all-the-boxes way. You can almost hear the sound of Radio 1, Q, her record company and so on slapping each other on the back. It's just so conservative. And I like Amy Winehouse.

My favorite part of the Adele single was the strings. But I agree with you that something wasn't pulling together. The voice is wrong, should either be more cheeky or er... more something. It's this weird combo of pale good taste and... well, some sort of attitude, hypothetically.

Where's the place to talk about the new Celine Dion single?* It's good (and to say I was gobsmacked when the man on the radio said it was Celine is putting it mildly).

*answer: on poptimists I guess, but probably best to wait until all the look-back-at-2007 orgafun is dispensed with.

Which one is it? Apparently they're not releasing her cover of Heart's 'Alone' in the UK and choosing something else instead? *boggle*

"Alone" is my favorite song on the album; if I understand what Wiki was saying, and if Wiki was being correct (two ifs), it seems not to have been pushed as a single but managed to chart mildly on the basis of downloads anyway. "Taking Chances" is very good too, as is "Eyes On Me," which is supposed to be a single (according to Wiki). For links, see my response to Jeff.

Jeff, do you mean "Taking Chances", or do you mean "Alone" (which wasn't a single or a focus track but scored enough downlines to get into several charts) or do you mean "Eyes On Me"? All of which are good; perhaps you'd have been most gobsmacked by "Taking Chances" in that for the first third she simply copies Kara DioGuardi's phrasing.

In any event, if "Taking Chances" is your song, you should engage girlboymusic in conversation. We have discussed her album briefly here.
