Tenderly compiled from the votes of about 40 people.

40. FEIST - "My Moon My Man (Boyz Noize Remix)"

YouTube Video: here (I'm not embedding it cos it's not an actual video).

39. CASSIE - "Turn The Lights Off"

YouTube Video: here (as above except it's a picture of lovely Cassie not of god knows what).

38. KATE NASH - "Foundations"

Actual video footage of the Gnasher and wrestling toothbrushi!

37. RIHANNA - "Lemme Get That"

YouTube Video: here - this time we get an SLIDESHOW! Not a single yet (why? It's awesome!)

36. CORTNEY TIDWELL - "Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up (Ewan's Objects In Space Mix)"

NOT EVEN ON YOUTUBE! Come on somebody, make a Doctor/Rose fanvid or something.

35. ROISIN MURPHY - "Overpowered"

One vote here was for the Seamus Haji remix. Nightbuses! Kebabs!

34. MIA - "Jimmy"

Video as "re-enacted" on the dancefloor of Poptimism! (Which is on THIS SATURDAY pop pickers)

33. TIMBALAND ft KERI HILSON - "The Way I Are"

No embedding on this video but since it's been totally omnipresent on music TV this year you hardly need it. "You can still touch my knob, it's free"

Nos. 32-25 tomorrow!

SMALL PRINT:

1. I didn't bother checking if songs were released in 2007 or not. Some weren't (or haven't yet been, maybe).

2. If a song and a remix both got votes I combined them and gave the placing to whichever version got more points.

3. Points were alotted to placings Eurovision style i.e. 12-10-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1.

4. I won't be saying how many points tracks got till we get to the top 10 though.

5. Only songs with 2 or more voters got placed.

6. Placings were decided by: # of points/# of voters/remix bizness/highest individual score given/artitrary whim - in that order.

Good god how did Kate Nash end up in here!

I absolutely love everything here except Gnash and Feist but somehow voted for none of them.

A couple of things about my list give me a twinge now, and not rating "The Way I Are" is one of them. I had no idea this was that huge, and in fact only got turned onto it maybe a month ago.

Actually totally forgetting about M.I.A. is the other, although it's not this lost Boney M track that I would voted for.

I would've voted for 'Hussel' ahead of 'Jimmy' ('Hussel' ended up at like 12th or something), 'Tell Everybody' over 'Overpowered' and 'Lemme Get That' if 'Umbrella' hadn't existed. Saving 'Turn The Lights Off' for next year: impressed that a song which doesn't officially exist made the final cut!

Still thinking about how exactly 'The Way I Are' appeals so much: it's kind of like the opposite of the more annoying nu-Timba tracks, where what's offputting isn't so much the music per se as how his smug sense of self-importance seeps into the music, where everything has to be a Grand Statement (look! 'What Goes Around' is nine minutes long! 'Give It To Me' disses Prince and Janet and, er, Fergie!). But 'The Way I Are' is so short, slight, resolutely generic, that despite the sound being distinctively Timbaland you can suspend your disbelief completely, it could be anyone at all, and it becomes a quite beautifully pure thing.

Hang on which, Nash??? It is not nice at all, it is vile.

(PS I have not forgotten that email you sent ages ago! It is v interesting and I am waiting until such time as I am compos mentis to compose a reply - NB this is NOT TODAY oh christ it is all a bit of a mess.)

It seems neat how the Tidwell is the only off-youtube one and the only one I'd actually heard during 2007...

Top 40 So Far:
Turn The Lights Off
Foundations (Catching up rapidly)
Stars Get Tangled Up
My Moon My Man
Jimmy
Lemme Get That
Overpowered
The Way I Are

I didn't vote for any of these. Would have voted for Cassie but I decided to save it for 08. But this is a good list so far.

SO tempted to try and make video for the Tidwell remix...probably not involving DT & Monkey Girl tho

First time I've heard the Cassie! Such a slacker...

WAIT when this is done can have a second orgafun where we are only allowed to vote for the tracks in the Top 40? And see what it does to the results?

Haha I suspect one of my votes has any chance of placing. Though it's nice to see tracks that I had to woefully discard from my top ten getting repped!

(Will the full spreadsheet be made available at some point? I'm as curious about the votes that didn't make it as the ones that did, to be honest! *nerd*)

Hurrah! I wasn't the only person to vote for "Turn The Lights Off," and I don't see any reason I can't vote for it two years in a row.

The only one I haven't heard is Tidwell, though I haven't yet given this version of the Feist a spin.

I don't think it's Feist's fault that everyone who writes about her makes her seem like she's doing music for passive-aggressives. But I'd like her a lot more if she were more Lilyish (pleased to be sticking herself in your eye, that is).

I'm glad that I voted for Foundations as it has vexed The Lex, but as it happens, I still really like it...

Great list so far -- the Tidwell remix was on one of the Poptimixes and I put a little "find this" star next to it. (Still not sure if this was attached to a bigger project or was just a one-off -- I did seek out the Fred Ball album that "Uptown" was on, though, and wasn't disappointed -- four or five really great songs on there!)

I'm pretty sure I went with the version of my list with "Lemme Get That" on it, so yay.

Of these, I voted for Tidwell. I searched for a 12" or CD of this remix - allegedly the Pearson remixes were supposed to be issued as a standalone single - but in vain; I had to settle for an illegal mp3 in the end. The 'objects in space' mix is on the recent double CD compilation of Pearson remixes however.

Not heard the Feist remix, but the original is the one very good track on The Reminder.

Some tic-tacal voting in the 10 tunes I submitted. We shall soon see how effective that was, I guess. But I figured Rihanna would do just fine without my vote, and so it proved.

Count me in as someone who maybe had one track make the list, although it was my #1 track.. but maybe none did.

It would be fun to have a "DEFEND YER ONE-POINT SONG" entry. :)
