The fifth category is Act Of The Year - last year's winners Girls Aloud are up for it again but will face a fair degree of challenge I think. We didn't even need the randomiser for these nominees!

[Poll #1107455]

omg at any other time I'd pick Britney in a heartbeat but having seen Rihanna TAKE WEMBLEY BY STORM last night literally the only thing in my head is RIHANNA.

(sadly this means that among the things not in my head are WORDS FOR MY REVIEW due in AN HOUR AGO agh agh agh, I was really surprised to look at the clock at 10.30 and discover that the review had NOT WRITTEN ITSELF)

(OMG mass singalong to 'Unfaithful' = highlight of life)

On a related note I'm surprised La Winehouse didn't make it in.

Agreed re. Girls Aloud & Robyn.

There's no way I could tick anyone but Britney though, the album's astonishing and I'm really struggling which track from it to put in my top 10 tracks of the year (it could be one of about 5 quite easily). No one else comes close.

In 2007 Girls Aloud have become more indistinguishable from each other, apart from Sarah, who cut her hair.

Was between Rihanna and Britney for me. Britney has better hair, though.

obvious punchline

Rihanna's bob is pretty astounding though.

Later addition of dodgy highlights lost her marks.

its gotta be britney.

after all that crazy, and the mtv performance, she came back with a truly brilliant album.

girls aloud and rihannas albums are both ace, but its definitely gotta be britneys year....

Had to go for Girls Aloud over Rihanna, just. Just. Such a tough one - the demonic thrill of hearing Umbrella for the first time is still reverberating around my blood after six months, but I think the focused pop laser of teh GA means more to me. Both of the singles from the album are like puzzles that take a specific set of environmental alignments to decipher... but when the stars line up both Sexy No No and wonderful, wonderful Call the Shots are nigh untouchable.

I prefer the Britney and Robyn albums, but this isn't an album of the year poll and the year belonged to Rihanna. She went from a pop/rnb also-ran renowned for having one decent song per album to a world-conquering diva with a string of brilliant singles. I don't think Britney deserves 'Act of The Year' for managing to deliver a brilliant album despite being a complete mess (and a complete mess she is). I mean, that video? That performance? The non-stop hotel stays? They're just embarrassing.

I agree that Rihanna went from being one of many up&coming r&b babydivas to a deserved megasuperstar but it's just not true that she had one good song per album - Music Of The Sun is a long-time favourite of mine, A Girl Like Me is kind of patchy but has even higher highs than MOTS. Good Girl Gone Bad might actually be my least favourite Rihanna album. But none of them are bad albums except in a "beyond the great tracks, which comprise most of the album, there is some filler" sense.

That wasn't really my point though - whatever you personally think of her previous albums, she DID have the reputation of having one good song per album. The response to 'Umbrella' was much along those lines.

'Unfaithful' was at least as big as 'SOS' though (also a million times better). Got a MASSIVE reception last night.

oh come on, it so wasn't as big. 'SOS' was one of the biggest selling singles of the year and popped up in loads of critic end of year lists. 'Unfaithful' was a hit, undoubtedly, but I don't think it really affected her album reputation. As I said, I remember the widespread reaction to 'Umbrella' being that it was great, but the album would probably be rub.

My nomination for this category was Antonina Armato/Tim James who co-wrote half of and produced all of the Aly & AJ album, wrote "Bet On It" from HSM2, and co-wrote "See You Again" and "East Northumberland High" by Miley Cyrus. I voted for Britney Spears, though I was pretty close to voting for Fall Out Boy.

I think Britney had way more extra-album awesomeness than any of the other 4 nominees, she was way bigger than the other nominees from a press standpoint (at least in America), and her actual music was better than any of the nominees. A no brainer.
