Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons - "The Night" - it was a top 10 hit! The drama! The bass! The chorus! It's AWESOME! And - it is where something like 80% of Pulp's style was obviously lifted from - srsly! Even that moody little breakdown bit after the chorus.

EDIT: Apparently Pulp covered it - only fair I think! If anyone's got that then I'd like to hear it - thanks.

I've never heard this either. It doesn't seem to have been a hit in the United States. Probably from the '70s (after the group's major heyday); tag has it on a Motown '70s anthology. I think I'm hearing a Holland-Dozier-Holland influence (though HDH were gone from Motown by the '70s).

Also the reformed Soft Cell, and Intastella. The latter is probably my favourite version - not that I love the band in general, but the song seems more sincere from girl to girl, less like a veiled effort to get in there by the singer under the cover of friendship.

I've been telling people how great this is all year! Nobody listens to me etc etc... Apparently the Klaxons also covered it, but never mind.
