The Brit Box: CANON

The Brit Box is Rhino Records' new box set repackaging - for an American audience - of the history of British indie music, 1984-1998, taking the story from the Smiths all the way to...well, you'll see.

I thought it would be a good one to do as a canon - MOAR FOOL ME as it took ages to type and typing really made me think the whole thing is incredibly badly put together. But don't take my word for it, go and use your TWENTY-SIX!!!! tickys yourself on the below.

I was being as generous as I was for the Sheeeyine polls and still only managed 24 ticks. And I LIKED indie! If I had only had 20 ticks then Dodgy, Sleeper, The Bluetones and Kula Shaker would not have made the cut.

They've picked the right songs though! Riverboat Song is always worth a tick as is Loaded.

I admit I ticked Echobelly on principle, it's totally not their best song At all, in fact I can't even remember it, I just heart Sonya Aurororora and Debbie McGee (that's the right surname, yes) out of Echobelly.

Yeah there's some mad selections, and it's weirdly inconsistent. Like - Primal Scream - Loaded. Oasis - Live Forever. Pulp - Common People. Blur - Tracy Jacks. Spot the odd one out!

It's hard to work out if the rationale is "the best tracks by these bands", "obscure gems for the US market", or both. Of course it might be that once you've licensed Common People and Live Forever your budget isn't going to stretch much beyond Thousand Yard Stare anyway.

The Mondays one doesn't seem an odd pick though! I mean if you want 1x representative of baggy that is the one!

This is much better than the stuff that was in the Shine polls. Managed 26 no problem. (Tho there's nowt tickworthy at all in the METAL TICKY section.)
