The History Of Pop Part 6 aka Just look towards the west and find a friend

It's Thursday, it's 2'o'clock, it's time for the Now poll. The series reaches surely its lowest ebb with Now 6, and evidence of penny-pinching abounds with minor hits and follow-ups all over the shop. Luckily those old faithfuls UB40 and Phil are around to 'steady the ship'. Did they ever team up? It seems inconceivable that they didn't and yet I can't remember - or my brain won't let me.

It has to be admitted that the 'bookies' have a clear favourite this time, but then the bookies certainly wouldn't have tipped Katrina and The Waves to beat out the competition on Now 5. Jimmy Nail seems to have attracted most of the DAILY HATE.

Comments, complaints, love letters to Baltimora, and musings on the impossibility of love across the iron curtain in the comments box, please.

[Poll #624179]

Isn't 'Baltimora' a paedophile disguised as a lion?

[identity profile] atommickbrane.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Paedofeline?

Thanks Tom. Can you also supply clue re: "Mated"?!

Gary Moore = one time Skid Row, Colosseum II and Thin Lizzy guitarist. Made 1xGREBT LP with his own band G-FORCE in 1980. For these, all later sins (if any) forgiveable

[identity profile] thenipper.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I am amazed that freakytigger doesn't like the Cameo single! It's the second best thing on this NOW!

[identity profile] thenipper.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Further to the Queen speculation, I think this was also the moment Madness lost the plot. Certainly the first single of theirs I actively disliked.

For about half a second I wondered how on earth Phil Collins could be duetting with Marilyn Manson in the mid 80s.

I am the ONLY person who has not voted for kate bush as the bestest!

"Dear Baltimora,
I love you and your lovely record Tarzan Boy with all the oh-ohs in the chorus
Love katie xxxx"

nikita is the EJ i'd like to like but actually - once it gets about a third of the way in - remember is not all that

there are two things i like abt elt =
i. that john lennon said he was the FUTURE OF ROCK'n'ROLL (another strike against ver 60s and DRUG INTAKE possibly)
ii. his tantrums in various fly-on-the-wall dox down the ages

How can anyone prefer Kate Bush to "Tarzan Boy"? This isn't the internet I know.

Eurythmics shd win this. It is their best song.

I also own "Fried Chicken", KT Bush, Siouxsie, Cameo. And Feargal is "on tape". All are good.

Eurythmics were on my shortlist for worst!

'Miami Vice Theme' was my favourite song on Now 6 at the time. During car journeys to Tamworth to visit grandparents we would fast forward the tape to it but often misjudge and have to endure the closing 30 seconds of Paul Hardcastle.

'Tarzan Boy' and 'Body Rock' obv. ace although I suppose 'Running Up That Hill' IS the best on here.

The UB40 song is about Ali Campbell being AN STALKER (as pointed out by M Carlin one time if by no-one else) and is creepy as fcuk.

[identity profile] boyofbadgers.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Creepy songs about stalking not intrinsicly bad tho!

[identity profile] carsmilesteve.livejournal.com 2005-12-01 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
this was My First Now (my sister had 1 (i got thriller that year)), and thus almost perfect.

apart from all the cr@p obv.

isn't now 8 worse than this btw?

You lot are mental. I feel aggrieved on behalf of all the other great songs that they're getting a trouncing by Kate sodding Bush.

Now 10 is the best of them (IE the first I bought), and unless I approach that vote in a state of perfect judicial balance, I'll probably vote for all of them.
