August saw 'Toxic' walkover the 2004 vote, with 33 ticks, whilst even Band Aid 20 got more ticks than Brian McFadden. Ha! Today we have a curious mix of soap stars, charity singles and... Jive Bunny. It's 1989!

perhaps on youtube there is the amusing clip of Pitney miming to it on GMTV but the vocals coming in earlier than he expected and him waiting a whole two couplets before joining in ha ha

I didn't tick it cuz I don't know the song. Perhaps some sort of remedying action is in order.

(I ticked every song I know except Band Aid 2)

The only real disappointment is that she doesn't list actual places she looked for said baby in during her round the world search.

Do you suppose this song is getting even less airplay these days in light of certain developments over the last 6 months?

I ticked four of the six I remember hearing (and I must have heard "Ride On Time," but I don't remember). The entirety of Jason Donovan's chart action in the U.S. = "Too Many Broken Hearts" no. 39 on the hot dance maxi-singles chart.

(I didn't tick the Bangles or the ignorance of Xmas song.)

Kylie had a couple of bright-as-toothpaste hits here in 1988, "Locomotion" even getting up to number 3, then disappeared for thirteen years until "Can't Get You Out Of My Head," with only sporadic chart presence since.

The only Jason Donovan song I like was his Christmas single this year, "When You Come Back to Me" which is one of those songs that isn't Christmas thematically but sounds christmassy due to liberal use of bells.

Ride on Time is ace - it was the biggest hit of the year, spending 6 weeks at number one and was the best selling too (just shy of a million).

2 things really strike me here:

1) The sheer domindance of SAW this year - responsible for TEN #1s in total

2) The general rubness to downright awfulness of those 10 SAW #1s

they seemed to be really spent at this point and the good productions of Blackbox, Soul II Soul and even Lisa S sound vastly superior.

altho i was almost going to tick 'Hand On Your Heart'. i remember Holly Johnson dissing it in Smash Hits. thought he would be a bit more tolerant of Kylie...er, not because he was gay like, just er seeming like nice pop-loving guy generally...

I seem to remember a Record Mirror article from this year (or possibly 1990) celebrating SAW's 100th top 75 single, which was a pretty impressive feat. There can't be many producers to have come close to that kind of record seeing as they must only have started in about 85?

Jive Bunny Syndrome

Date: 2007-10-03 02:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com
it's been talked about before but the only thing that really bothers me about JB is JB himself - not cute, not cheeky, not charismatic, just looked extremely punchable - which takes real effort for an animated rabbit frankly.

the 'is it a medley or is it a megamix' thing is quite interesting (to me) tho. i think we may have established at some point that megamixes have to feature elements of songs not in straight linear sequence so you don't just switch from one to the next in turn. this could be cobblers tho. maybe medleys have to be all songs by the same artist? seems silly too.

many (most?) of the songs used in the JB singles are okay in themselves. there's a possible smugness or triteness in how they're presented in this context perhaps but i'm not sure about that. even the fiddling with the "C-c-come on everybody" bit is no worse than all the "Aw yeah!" and Lyn Collins samples going on at this point...is it?

at the time of JB you also had Latino Rave/Deep Heat 89 in the charts by The Various Artists and this is clearly a megamix. see also 'The Brits 1990'.

JB = medley BECAUSE they got ppl to rerecord the songs so they didn't have to pay mechanicals, ditto stars on 45. technotronic = megamix.

I compiled my own chart sometimes after listening to the Top 40 sometimes. Bobby Brown's 'On My Own' was top for 6 weeks, beating 'Batdance' by 1. I think my brother got the Batman soundtrack on tape but I then bought the Ghostbusters 2 one.

If only 'Pacific State' had been Christmas #1.

is far more deserving of your worst votes than the charity singles and jive bunny. It's one of the most boring dirges ever to hit number one.

Glad to see this is getting lots of ticks. In the circles that I ran in, this album seemed to herald a huge sea change in music -- just as an example, my uni roommate who was a big Metallica fan really liked this. (Of course the sea change, when in came, was in 1991-92 and in a completely different direction.)
