[Poll #1049325]

Due to having excessive time on my hands and not wanting to actually start tidying/packing for another few days at the very least, I have hunted down YouTubes of all of the above:
James Blunt
Elvis
Scouting For Girls
Natalie Imbruglia
Reverend and The Makers [poss. not work safe]
Maroon 5 [also poss. not work safe]
The Twang
Armand Van Helden

Yeech. I have not heard any of those apart from the Elvis, which I'm not ticking on principle. Well, I must have heard the Armand when I listened to the album promo when it came through this year, but 0 recollection. And other than the Armand...well. I think I can live without ever hearing any of them.

I think Scouting For Girls might actually be the worst band name of all time. Bonus points for the creepy, lecherous song about scouting for girls.

The Natalie Imbruglia single is good, but not great. That's the only one I've heard. Aside from Elvis, obviously, but I'm just going to politely pretend that isn't even on the list.

I'm only ticking the Armand Van Helden one because the title suggests it's some kind of version of Come To Daddy by Aphex Twin. Is it?

Scouting for Girls - words fail me

Argh, The Twang. Argh.

Er. No ticky, this week. Thank you for the youtube links, by the way, that was very nice.

I confess I don't hear much of "LITD" in "1973". Perhaps my expectations of it were low, but I quite like this actually.

That and Natalie and Maroon 5 are all "safe" Radio 2 fodder, but even so are all borderline ticks for me. (P.S. I am v. old)

Maroon 5 man has been 1xMASSIVE CAD about Maria Sharapova this week. I don't actually like Sharapova very much but impugning the honour of ANY of my tennis girls is NOT ON.

Apparently his 'representative' has since denied the quote (or indeed that they even met more than once ever).

OMG I haven't been following the US Open since about Day 2 and just looked at the BBC news site in order to catch up. How about the bottom half of the women's singles draw right now?

The bottom half of the women's singles is an amazing and beautiful thing. AGNIESZKA MOTHERFUCKING RADWANSKA!!!!! She is a revelation. Ed O and I have seen something of an explosion ensue in our Radwanska Sisters facebook group. Props to Agnes Szavay and Tamira Paszek, too.

On the downside, neither Serena Williams nor Andy Roddick have lost yet. I trust Justine and Roger will take care of those.

Bah. I won't hear a word said against Serena. I love her.

She's one of those players I'll defend to non-tennis fans, whose comments can be astoundingly ignorant (eg "she looks like a man" w/evs!) but really she's one of my least favourite players...I prefer finesse players over finesse players, I hate her amateur dramatics and labour pain grunts, and I really hate her disrespect to the Tour as a whole (eg never showing up to any tournaments except Slams, always crying off with 'injuries' etc).

Yeah. Basically I want Justine to massacre her 6-0 6-0.

Yeah, I do have a lot of sympathy with you on all of those points, and kind of agreed with them myself - until I went to see her play at Wimbledon, first playing singles and then doubles with her sister, and they just blew me away with the power and particularly their passion. I've been a fan ever since, grunts and all.

Anyway, I don't think she's deliberately disrespecting the tour, more that she's got a much wider range of interests to fill her time than just tennis. Kind of like a Paris Hilton of the tennis world.

She and Paris are friends! They announced their celibacy vow together.

I don't apply any of my views on pop music to tennis, I would pretty much be a tennis rockist. I like old-skool traditional clever play, finesse and stuff rather than dumb ballbashing, and I think it's really bad for the sport when its biggest name (and one of its biggest talents) has such a casual attitude towards it. I don't like the glitzy celebrity of certain players either, b/c it often just translates into favouritism. Also, I love US pop stars and hate US tennis players.

Which must make me a tennis popist. I love it.

I really like the glitzy celebrity side, lots of the other players I find bland, even if I can appreciate their finesse.

The Creeps

Am I being blind or has this not appeared in one of these polls yet (it's at no. 9 this week)? It's a lot better than most of the electro-dancey stuff in the charts at the moment and well worth a tick.

They're both pretty similar really. Although for some reason I prefer the Freaks one to the Fedde Le Grand one. The hookline has been stuck in my head for days since I first heard it.

I, like several others it seems, have ticked none of the above. But I believe there is an error in the poll - there is one song missing, that would probably have converted most if not all the "DON'T LIKE ANY" ticks into "Yes, I like that one" ticks.

Girls Aloud's 'Sexy, No, No, No' is released today, I'm pretty certain.

Date: 2007-09-03 01:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
It is only once they've got into the charts! 'Sexy No No No' is not there yet. It MIGHT NEVER GET THERE!

Only when they go top 40. It's at 64 this week, so should chart properly for next week's poll

Running commentary

Blunt - I like this. And not because Popjustice told me to! This sort of song is much more flattering to his voice than the You Is Beautiful song. Less braying and more actual SINGING. Braying only ever worked for Charles & Eddie, and Blunt has now learned this. I this is good catchy MumPop, well worthy of a tick.

Elvis - I've been ticking the Elvis re-releases so far, this is another great one so the theme shall continue.

SFG - argh a pleasant piano intro RUINED by more Kate Nash/Fratellis busker nonsense. I like the cowbell and the piano but the chorus is way too grating to get a tick.

Broogli-Wooglia - is this going to be an Andreas Johnson cover? Nope. A bit boring, inoffensive and forgettable. No tick.

Rev & Makers - am trying to stay open-minded about this one. I can see what they're trying to do - it's upbeat enough for a good ol' bop down the indie disco. With the fashionable grim council estate poetry over the top. It's ok but tbh I'd rather listen to Shed Seven. Yes exactly.

M5 - I liked their last one, let's see what they can offer as a follow up. Oooh it's good! I like the over-dramatic chorus and the zwwip-ee-zwwip bits. Tick.

Twang - OH GOD GO AWAY. It's like Rev & Makers but without the energy.

AVH - I RLY like 'Touch Your Toes', but this isn't 'Touch Your Toes'. No tick.

I think I am going to stay on the safe side and not hear the song.

Calm. Calm. It doesn't exist. Just a bad dream.
