(oh and also I am using "song" to mean "piece of music", because I am lazy. "means a lot" can mean whatever you want it to - different things for different questions I'm guessing)

The final question was difficult. Obviously music hugely important to me now - my hobby is writing about it, I make money doing the same, my social network is rooted in it - but I'd be lying if I put anything other than "18-19" as the answer: half a year of speaking to almost nobody and listening incessantly to it, half a year of talking non-stop to new friends about it. What I like and don't like has never seemed quite as frighteningly, suffocatingly important to me as then.

Is that cus you then established your tastes and so the experience is not so... hrmm I don't know, like breakneck falling? I mean not that obv. your tastes probably haven't evolved since then but within similar fields and circles or something.

I think I am quite possibly still in the hurtling stage but the descent is slowing, to continue the bad metaphor.

Hmm maybe - my tastes expanded a lot during that time. I got given a box of cassettes pirated by an uncle who had died the year before I was born, in a car smash, and I got into some old stuff through those (and I was terribly lonely and refusing to admit it). And then I fell in with a bunch of people who were very into art-rock and post-punk stuff and I learned about that through them and they learned about current indie through me, and we all argued about music ALL THE TIME, and could be very damning of new finds that didn't measure up. So I think I felt that my nascent friendship-circle was very dependent on music taste in a way it hasn't really been since.

My tastes have expanded lots more since but I've felt much more in charge of it - my attempts have been much more willed.

I expand on it a lot (FAR TOO MUCH i suspect my daer readership will think) in the Pitchfork column I just submitted - up next Tuesday though I'll be on holiday by then so will miss what small reaction there is.
