What surprises me is that a) it's still effective/affecting, b) I'm still noticing new things about it, like the strange resemblance to the BBC News theme in the blips under the chorus.
It sounded so incredibly wintry when I first heard it (and still does) that I'm really surprised, in a lot of ways, that it made it as a summer number one. I suppose it probably depends when you first hear it innit.
I'm glad it became a hit cos I just wasn't in the mood for it in Winter! (Not because it isn't wintry - was just too exhausted for anything but Comfort Rock when it first surfaced) So I've been able to get into it along with the rest of the country, hurrah.
Also I think it's a record that sounds better and more striking as a big hit - this may be the indie kid in me though.
I didn't like it at first because I was hoping for bosh and was disappointed. Then I just happened to watch the newer (better) video whilst in a soppy mood - it totally knocked me for six.
The old video was totally better! Stuff rushing past a train window is exactly what the song evokes for me anyway. Also, it has less Robyn in it. That woman's face and hair really annoy me.
If I was the sort to be bitter I would be v annoyed that Robyn is getting the glory which was Annie's by right.
Completely, I'm a big fan of that Annie album but 'emotional depth' in her voice is not one thing I'd agree with at all - and it's one of Robyn's biggest strong points.
I think Robyn has a much richer voice, and "With Every Heartbeat" shows it off brilliantly, but her delivery often really puts me off - there's a cuteness to it that's annoying (on eg Bum Like You, Robot Boy, Konichiwa Bitches (which I like)). Annie sounds more grown-up and sympathetic though her voice isn't as strong.
now the cuteness (as opposed to smugness) criticism i do agree with, altho Annie doesn't sound particularly grown up on 'My Best Friend' herself. i have deliberately and conveniently forgotten all the Robyn album tracks I don't like (half of them) but i still heartses them both, with Berger and Zetlitz not too far behind.
Annie's offensively cute sometimes, too. Admitedly I can't think of any of these points off the top of my head but I've definitely though it about her.
and now for an alternative opinion from someone on the official radio 1 chart message board (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio1/F2675884?thread=4466277):
Robyn for number one today!
Message 1 - posted by Ghosthunter233 I really hope Robyn gets the number one spot today. If she does it'll be the first truly worthy number one since Evanescence's Bring Me To Life.
It would signify the end of 4 years of sub-standard number ones...
