The Duran Duran-on was too long to type out in a busy lunchtime - instead here's their bestest chums, Spandau Ballet! You get FIVE ticks out of this lot. Use them wisely!

I have only knowingly heard two of these songs.

Were they that huge though? I was kinda surprised you thought them canon worthy. ALTHO' - BUT - HOWEVER I do remember a lot of these and their "any good at all" to meh ratio = actually quite high!

I agree. I had their greatest hits in the late eighties and most of it was blinding. Highly pop too, in a way that among their peers only Duran Duran could claim.

That is frankly unbelievable. You must have heard True, and Gold very commonly played too.

It's like enforced jolliness, the kind of thing which makes me think of office outings and team building exercises, it sort of blares horribly and demands that you feel positive. It's all a bit much really.

Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only one that hates it.

Oh oh, I found John Darnielle's article about Spandau Ballet lyrics (http://www.riverfronttimes.com/2001-04-18/music/spandau-ballet/) (I think there may have been more than one actually) - it is cheery reading.

DO NOT WANT

My ex-boyfriend used to deliberately torment me with 'Gold.' I hate it for being the world's most annoying song ever and also because he used to take great glee in how furious it made me to have it in my presence, generally introducing it into contexts in which it was totally unsuitable.

I really, really hate it. So incredibly much. It presses the same instant, incoherent fury button in me as mentioning Nietzsche. Just thinking about it is making me really angry.
