[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] poptimists
Some of the most interesting threads from last month:

The ethics of music listing on social networking sites
Where R UK female musicians plz?
Sinatra canon - "Does Poptimism only begin with rock'n'roll?"
Last.FM top artists - what does it all mean?
MARK MAH MIXTAPE: dubdobdee's youthmobb
Poptimists vs The Mercury
Pop On TV gordian knotfest
Amerie vs Rihanna
Suicidal! Suicidal!
What are words worth?

Lots of other good stuff - yesterday's convos about P5 and the sound of now, the 06 vs 07 chat on the Now poll, Kate Nash and Fergie howls in the Year In Pop - but one has to stop somewhere. Let me know if you think this kind of round-up is a good idea. (I might post it to FT too)

And now...

this kind of round up is great for me -- in the usual "do my homework for me' way!

This is an ace idea! Especially when lots of us are on holiday...

Yes this is a great idea! Would've liked to have been around for the Amerie/Rihanna discussion - really want to expand on the point about slow jams at the end (though no time at all for oh god rest of life)

I think I've probably read them! The key is loving r&b songs vs loving r&b as a genre, how much time one has for the boundaries and formal requirements of the genre (and loving formalism is REALLY IMPT!). Et cet.

I have quit ILM btw! Which means completely, as I have no actual willpower. So no archives, deleted from bookmarks, I might even have to wave goodbye to the minimal bobbins thread. But I will not be returning, that place has nothing further to offer me or the world and actually just makes me feel bad.

I applaud your actions and will mock you mercilessly should your willpower collapse (for your own good, obviously!!). Even without a certain regular who has been banned, it is still a pit of negativity and horror.

I don't think he was even the problem, really - obv better not to have him around but it was getting more pathetic than anything else towards the end. The problem for me is that 99% of posters seem to think it's high school, and the internet is the only place where the nerds can act like the jocks, and if you want to discuss anything at all you have to talk in the right way and think in the right way and like the right stuff for the right reasons, and all of those right reasons are really staid and conservative, and then you add the insufferable insistence on seeming jaded and the fact that no one listens to each other ever...it's just a place for people bored at work, basically. And given all the other places like that now, it's pretty unnecessary! It's a real pity that a forum which was so important to developing my tastes and my writing has so little to offer but there we are.

I know but I only like this when it's up to me! Like moving from myspace to facebook. I still like the format of ilx better than most other internet places, it's a pity about the people.

OK, I did (see below). Also, ilX (albeit ILE) just justified its continued existence with this post from gff on the "Bridge Collapse In Minneapolis" thread:

"josh k is ok"

I remember in a college class Kai Erikson told us that in the 19th and early 20th century immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe transported the rural peasant culture of Europe to the cities of America. A few years later I was living on the Lower East Side and said to myself, "Yes, and now bohemians have transported the culture of the suburban high school to what used to be the immigrant neighborhoods of New York, but with the wallflowers in ascendence." But I didn't mean that derogatorily, as at the time (c. 1978) it was a pretty interesting bohemia.

Have no idea who "he" is. In any event, we'll miss you on rolling teenpop (though that thread's losing lots of spark too, as ilX becomes less and less pertinent and people forget to check in).

[ENOUGH griping about ILX on poptimists plz. It is k-boring. We know already]

My positive energies are also directed towards:

Sean Kingston - 'Beautiful Girls'

Miley Cyrus - 'East Northumberland High' and 'See You Again'

Uffie - the wtf new single, beyond bad (tho' the flip side, "Brand New Car", is good; I have submitted that for the next podcast)

Kendal Carson - 'I Like Trucks'

Cornelius - Sensuous LP (yes, yes, I know all your qualms about Pizzicato Five IN SPADES. But this is so calculated, it transcends being "indie about pop" or whatever. Some of it reminds me more than anything of Boulez and Stockhausen's total serialism pieces for piano)

Excellent idea to link exceptional threads, esp. since I missed a huge hunk of July.
