In no way is the canon choice this week due to me purchasing their Best Of yesterday! First half Roxy, second half Bryan-solo, ELEVEN ticks to dish out overall. What's her name? Virginia Plain?

Wasn't "Do The Strand" a hit?

Best single here - "Street Life" maybe? Love how it keeps finding a second (third, fourth) wind just when you think it's winding down, much like a good night out indeed.

pete just plays it a lot, don't think it was a hit. also, where is psychokiller???

Psycho Killer was by Talking Heads. Or is there a Roxy song with the same title I don't know of (this is entirely possible)?

hahaha, i am a tw@. i honestly thought VERY HARD about whether it was by roxy or not, then decided YES it was, even though i am CLEARLY WRONG.

Arf.

The wiki page for "Psycho Killer" does however note that it was covered by a band named Moxy Früvous.

Which um sounds a bit like Roxy Music...

The Moxy version is quite good, but doesn't approach the original. Actually, it's the live versions that are the most memorable for me.

I think it's fair to say that David Byrne's tremulous singing style on Psycho Killer plus the bits of French in it does recall Ferry.

Obv you are still CLEARLY WRONG, but there's an excuse for you!

Blimey. Probably my favourite Roxy song as well.

Street Life is the best single of ALL TIME, let alone here. Sorry to sound a bit sna*esba*e about this.

Ferry's highest-charting (actually "only charting") US single (#33) - bubbled under in the UK, I guess.

From: [identity profile] dubdobdee.livejournal.com
the old-skool argt used to be that roxy were at their peerless weird height JUST AFTER eno left -- when ferry was still angry with him and a bit awed by him, but the "eno-ish" elements were being supplied by mckay and manzanera, and the idea of "tasteful" was incredibly disorientating and exciting (and noisy) (in a loudness sense but also a noise vs signal sense)

(a good indicator of this: compare the cover gurlz on stranded and country life to the ditto on flesh and blood)

I kind of agree, actually.

I think I might agree with that too, though I have a sort of insane NUVVIEWORLD reaction to Roxy where it's hard for me to dislike anything they did.

From: [identity profile] elegantfaker.livejournal.com
Yeah, I know. I kind of lose my mind whenever thinking about/listening to them -- no matter the era. (For instance, the harp bit on Angel Eyes leaves me speechless. Still.) But I can have occasional moments of lucidity, as evidenced by my 11 perfect ticks today. Ha!

Date: 2007-07-13 12:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com
I narrowed this down to 13 ticks (with some reluctance) but could not reduce to 11.

Interesting thing about Roxy, especially in the early years, was their double life as a singles band and an albums act. "Virginia Plain" and "Pyjamarama" were (Factory records style) not included on an album until their first Greatest Hits package (which also = their best LP, shockah). And even the later singles that were culled from LPs aren't really very representative of those LPs.

I also liked that Ferry would compete commercially with himself by regularlly releasing solo LPs throughout the time that Roxy were going.

Pyjamarama is a true great, and weirdly underrated. It's good to see it getting a bit of recognition in above poll.

Yes, good album which errr I don't currently own. Must acquire.

I do however have the 12" single of the super-awesome "Angel Eyes" which song has distressingly few ticks so far plz to remedy poptimists kthxbye

I *much* prefer the original mix of Angel Eyes (feat. Phil Manzanera) to the single version that is everywhere now.

Sadly, my fave Roxy song is prob "Ladytron" and, of course, it ain't on there. Still, yeah, 11 ticks was v difficult.

There was an unapproved Lindstrom & Prins Thomas remix of Avalon doing the rounds on the interweb a few months back. Worth googling for.

Now the party's over, I'm so tired
And I see you walk in out of nowhere
Much communication in a motion
Without conversation or a notion
Ooooh-mmmm

I thought, oh sweet baby Jesus, I can never pick just 11, but it was easier than I expected once I really started winnowing for superior quality. Apparently, I sure do love Roxy/Bryan 1979-1980. That was kind of fun to discover.

Only if I could give multiple ticks to certain singles!

Because it was just a sequential run of 11 tacks on the very top. Roxy Music to Manifesto, inclusive with surrounding singles -- and adding "More Than This", were all top notch.

I can honestly say I do not know any Roxy Music songs.

When is there going to be a Manic Street Preachers poll?

Is there a rational connection between Roxy Music and the Manics or is that something I've just always had somewhere in my brain and am imagining you are alluding to?

My mum's car ate our cassette copy of 'Avalon' a few years ago, possibly due to the fact I put it on at every possible opportunity but I suspect it was just petty radio sentience. Roxy Music compete with Depeche Mode for my Favourite Goth Group Ever (assuming I am not allowed to call Girls Aloud goths just because they are heavy drinkers, dress a bit slutty and have a lyric about a tourniquet...) although until about six months ago I genuinely believed 'Love Is The Drug' was by The Clash.

Oh, wow moggy, you busted Virginia Plain's 100% record. Are there really 11 better (= more goth, presumably) RM/Ferry songs in your opinion?

Date: 2007-07-13 07:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] piratemoggy.livejournal.com
Actually I just don't know that one. I did YouTube it just now and found it "alright." I don't think I ticked eleven, since although I like them a lot I know, like, two albums (Avalon and the one before that) rather than the whole back catalogue. Like Depeche Mode, they're the sort of thing I love but don't own anything of for reasons I'm never totally sure of.
