There you are. Bit of a feeble line up - I think the UK charts probably more to blame for this than Poptimists' (sometimes errant) tastes. What do you think?

By the way, these positions aren't final, even relative to one another - in fact a couple are already out of date but I'm not going back and rechecking the 2007 polls (which are ALL STILL OPEN) until the end of the year!

Filter out the inexplicable crap and you've got yourself a pretty stellar top 20 or so there. Doesn't bear much resemblance to my own list but that's more to do with the fact that lots of mine is either yet to hit the UK charts, or will never be released here at all.

Most inexplicable absence, off the top of my head - R Kelly's 'I'm A Flirt'.

...just want that Betty Boo icon!

I'm still struggling with the concept of Umbrella (ella-ella-ella-ey-oh) being this years defining sound!

Not for me!

I'm afraid here in Oz, it was Sandi Thom....

However, in fairness, 69 singles get you into the top 100, so things don't move much!

None more defining: on Test Match Special on the BBC the other day, the venerable West Indian commentator Tony Cozier was banging on about it (he's from Barbados, where I guess Rihanna's now the national icon), which caused a bit of bafflement among his fellow pundits as Cozier is well into his sixties. And so every time it started to drizzle (quite often this soaked English summer), Cozier would refer to people putting up their "um-ber-ella-ella-ellas".

Not since Michael Holdings now legendary (in Oz) rant against the West Indies training with a rugby ball ("Richie, when they are ducking rugby balls bowled at them, they can train with rugby balls....BUT NOT BEFORE MON! NOT BEFORE! ONLY THEN!") has a West Indian cricket commentator displayed such a grasp of the pulse of the nation.

I have to like it if Top Cat is on board! That's BRILLIANT!
