I think this is the only band where I genuinely couldn't pick any. I COULD assume the ones I don't know aren't as bad as "Fly away on my zephyr", for instance, but then they are by the band who made that, so who really knows?

I know poptimism means you shouldn't be embarrassed about liking things, but liking the Zephyr Song is one of the few where I really do. This place is about the only place I'd admit to it too. I'm not even sure why I like it, I actively loathe 99% of the rest of their output.

RHCP are the band that keep getting mentioned as a kind of test case for "poptimism" i.e. they're very genuinely popular and I absolutely cannot stand them or see anything redeeming in them. I have to concede that if Poptimism means "finding value in what's popular" then RHCP defeat me, but luckily I don't think it is that (or at least I hope not).

There are none I could bring myself to tick but RHCP aren't anywhere the nadir of pop music! They've never enraged me as much as MANY other bands have.

There are people who have released worse records than anything by the RHCP, and there are probably people who have had short worse careers, but nobody who has gone on for this length of time at this consistency of badness.

Now I come to think about it I THINK that early review in Q (which has stuck with me cos I had never heard of them before, I guess), was on the lines of: "This is a bad band because they are not serious enough about their craft. If they work on their songwriting and tone down the zaniness they will be massive." CURSE YOU Q.
