I am very sad indeed that Ms Furtado's Say It Right does not appear in the overall top ten.

Long Blondes

I continue to want to like them, and I'm just not sold. Are they going to mature into something fabulous, or does Kate Jackson just have star quality that is being stifled by a derivative indie band? (Or neither?)

Kate Jackson has nice clothes and a semblance of charisma. This is not "star quality". So, neither. They're not, like, offensively bad, they're just really rather dull. Why would you want to like them?

re: KJ. I guess "stifled" and "mature" are the operative words - although there isn't that much on display so far, I keep coming back for more. You, I think, are too used to people appearing on the scene fully groomed, like they've been through the corporate image-making machine.

I increasingly fear that, for all the obvious Pulp comparisons, they're actually the new Kenickie - destined never to meet with anything like the mainstream success they were forecast, while forever meaning absolutely everything to a small band of devotees.

Objection, m'lud.

How in god's name did the godawful Manics come out higher than the Arctics in the April poll? What's wrong with you, Poptimists?

i think it was a sympathy/nostalgia vote, i know it was from me...

Neither sympathy nor nostalgia have any place in the cut-throat world of Poptimists.

The new MSP stuff is indeed bobbins, but anything short of a recording of John Lennon's corpse flatulently decomposing is preferable to the Arctic Munters.

I'm still licking my wounds over the poor showing of JoJo (who must be about 20 ticks out of contention). I expect you lot to poo all over her wonderfulness tomorrow, too.

The Jojo track tomorrow is far and away the best thing on the poll

Not that this is saying much! But it is a great single. (JoJo by the way is a huge mystery to me, since I have absolutely no feel for her personality or persona or anything, she's not a distinctive stylist (like, say, Jordan Pruitt, who can redeem pretty much anything), she just manages to deliver song after song after song: her Billy Steinberg song beats most people's Billy Steinberg songs (even t.A.T.u.'s), her Scott Storch song ranks very high among Scott Storch songs (compare to the latest Tiffany Affair single), and so on.)

It's been a while since I listened to the second JoJo album, but the title of this new single isn't ringing any bells. As Frank knows, I have been disparaging about recent JoJo elsewhere. But I'll give the album another go tonight, perhaps.

The "Lollipop" song in tomorrow's poll is definitely tickable. I own a version of it on the Ministry of Sound Clubbers Guide to 07 mix (this is an excellent compilation by the way - catch up with all the latest dance hits in one swoop!)

Over half the April top 10 is REALLY BAD! Not mediocre, not meh, but actively vile. And there were good singles which didn't make it! I am not claiming that Akon or Ne*Yo's last singles were, like, masterpieces or anything, but they're light years ahead of Mark Ronson/Manics/Arctic Monkeys, not to mention that nauseating Dan Le Sac horror.

God imagine what April would have been like if Amerie and Amy hadn't snuck in at the last minute :/

I mean can anyone explain that? Preferring Ronson or 'Thou Shalt Not Kill' or the fucking Arctic Monkeys to Akon and Ne*Yo? I am perplexed and worried.

Akon is just generally lamentable - he's basically the embodiment of every rockist argument against 'urban' music. Whereas NeYo I think is just hampered by not being something one hears about the place as much as the other three. I don't think I've actually heard any of his self-performed stuff.

...which means that hardly any of i is in my actual top 10 of 07 so far.

1. Ciara - Like A Boy
2. Nelly Furtado - Say It Right
3. Amerie - Take Control
4. Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend
5. Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
6. Amy Winehouse - You Know I'm No Good
7. The Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control
8. Fergie ft Ludacris - Glamorous
9. Hilary Duff - With Love
10. Natasha Bedingfield - I Wanna Have Your Babies
11. JoJo - Too Little Too Late
12. P Diddy ft Keyshia Cole - Last Night
From: [identity profile] alexmacpherson.livejournal.com
The Gossip should possibly be at 4 or 5 but I underrate it because it is about 9463833 years old and I certainly don't acknowledge it as being anything to do with 2007.
