Last week was a high scoring battle with poptimist perennial Billie Jean eventually grabbing 42 ticks to win the premium pop year of 1983 - Rod Stewart's Baby Jane is the highest scoring loser so far* with respectable 7. Yet MORE Rod this week - will the tick fatigue set in? Only YOU can decide! It's 1971.

[Poll #981484]

*I totally haven't checked this.

I think ILX just did this! I think all of them are AWFUL except Diana Ross which is OK.

(moi aussi)

(credit where it's due: recent Popular discussions of these songs mean that most of them feel like old friends to me now)

Never heard of it! I will watch on youtube when at home.

I have actually heard most of these though, and I still hate them.

I think there are half a dozen really great #1s in that list, personally!

Actually to be honest I don't think I've ever heard the original, but I've heard it sampled all over the place.

Not bad at all, but shockingly... minimal for a #1 (in 1971). Was it just that the skank was still new?

is marvellous. More love for this please.

What does the Mungo Jerry one sound like? I've only knowingly heard In The Summertime and I quite like that. Is this one any good?

No! Well not really. It's a bit bloozy but in a knowing, fun-free way. Nowhere near as good as "In The Summertime".

It's a bit Madlib for me, I can imagine Tanya going to town on it "He's no wizard but he excites my gizzard" etc.

I heard the original 'Hot Love' years after I heard the amazing Justus Kohncke/Meloboy cover and was kind of horrified, a reverse "what have they done to this song ugh!" feeling.

First I heard "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" was in this tremendous cover-mashup-remix, the second was the Caribbean remake (that actually snuck into the U.S. Top 40, though I didn't hear it until years later), then finally hunted down the Middle Of The Road version on YouTube and was really disappointed. But I ticked it anyway, 'cause of the song.

You'll probably like "Double Barrel."

It's nice! Disappointed when I realised it wasn't going to be a song though. Would have kept my attention better if it has been faster. I don't like weed.

Was just watching this on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_X4AyZW6LM) and thinking, "Clearly this was the period in time when they had enough momentum that even rubbish like this would go to #1." But alas, Frank thinks differently. Why?

Eerie, aggressive, minimal, the most intense thing they ever did - also the most Jamaican, with the gunshot echo effects and the walking ska bass. But unique: No other song by them or anyone else sounds like it. My fave is still "Cum On Feel The Noize," but this is number two. (The YouTube version is a very poor transfer, unfortunately.) Tom found the aggression disconcerting in a supposed love song, but that's another thing I like about it.
