The Friday Canon: ELVIS aka THE MONSTER TICK FEST

EVEN MORE TICKS THAN CLIFF. Jebus, Mr Presley was a busy bunny! In the first 3 years of his career he released 25 hit singles! And I'm sure he would have kept churning them out at a rate of knots if he hadn't joined the army/made a bunch of rubbish fillums/et less burgers.

I've left off the re-issues but there's still hella-ticky under the cut. You have THIRTY FOUR ticks to show your Elvis love. Uh-huh-huh!

[Poll #956916]

The Rolling Stones: (link)
1. Paint It Black
=2. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
=2. Jumping Jack Flash
4. Get Off My Cloud
5. Brown Sugar / Bitch / Let It Rock
6. Let's Spend The Night Together / Ruby Tuesday
7. Street Fighting Man
8. Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown
9. Honky Tonk Women
10. Start Me Up

I didn't come close to 34 ticks. I like some Elvis, and he was a very fine singer, but I think I overreact against him because of his overinflated rep. I dislike the fact that he is so incomparably huger than greater and more important talents, I think, such as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Ike Turner.

Basically it's a live version of the song during which "The King" repeatedly breaks down with the giggles. It's embarrassing to listen to really, only worth hearing the once, tops, but for me the original is kinda meh anyway, so I ticked it out of contrariness.

I'm surprised by these people not ticking Always On My Mind, but Jailhouse Rock is far and away the best record on this list.

Anyone who actually manages to tick 34 of these put your hands up.

I always tick the exact number,is this wrong? It seems a shame to waste the tickies.

I don't think I got to 34 even by ticking ones with enticing titles like "Do the Clam"

[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope it is a cousin to the magnificently WTF "Song Of The Shrimp"

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You can see it on youtube. The song is very very dull, but the Clam is hilarious. You can see why it never caught on as a dancecraze.

I ticked exactly 34 on my first pass, and went with it. Could have ticked another couple too, but knew it would be tricky in places and restrained myself.

How can 'Jailhouse Rock' be on 100% with 15 tickies and 'Suspicious Minds' be on 100% with just 14? LJ-Poll ERROR!

A lot of love for 'Return To Sender' which surprises me... I've always been a fan, but mainly because Wycombe used to have a right back called Danny Senda, and the fans used to sing 'Return To Sender' at him.

'Suspicious Minds' is blatantly the best thing the Pelvis ever did.

Re: what else was there for me to do but cry?

[identity profile] strange-powers.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, and covered by top nineteen eighties pop act The Smiths.

[livejournal.com profile] strange_powers is cheekily referring to the song "Rushholme Ruffians" off Meat = Mordor

Re: Smiffs

[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope! They also covered it live, and their version is released on their live album, Rank.

Re: Smiffs

[identity profile] strange-powers.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's what I'm on about. Although they do segue Rushholme Ruffians into it, if I remember correctly.

Guitar Man

[identity profile] lockedintheatti.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
More love for this please - it's a great pop song with a fantastic twangy guitar backing and best of all, a marvellous Elvis grunt leading into the outro.

US Male & A Little Less Conversation

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Both have (a) a great tune and (b) a fantastic sound and backbeat. But can anyone defend the lyrics?

Re: US Male & A Little Less Conversation

[identity profile] strange-powers.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, you could read A Little Less Conversation (which I haven't ticked, I think it's annoying) as a pretty scummy misogynist rant, but there's nowt wrong with US Male (which I did tick), is there? It's just Elvis using the threat of violence to keep some guy from hanging around his fiancee - the stereotypical behaviour of the tituar big-headed, stomp-happy sh1tkicker, which the lyrics point out in a fairly funny way.

Re: US Male & A Little Less Conversation

[identity profile] jeff-worrell.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess you're right. It was the woman = "property" line I took umbrage at when Wogan played this the other day. Hence my deciding to link "US Male" in toto with the other song (from same year, originally?)

Burning Love

[identity profile] blue-russian.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You should be all tickying this!

Also, why does "Got a Lot of Living To Do" sound familiar? Do I know this song, or is that a famous lyric from somewhere else? (Or both?)

Was there a song by the same name in Bye Bye Birdie? (I ticked it in case it's that song, even though whether it is or not I don't think I've heard Elvis's version.)
