Popworld Pulp, launching in a couple of weeks as a new music WEEKLY (v bold).

Looking at its MySpace it doesn't seem to be offering anything hugely compelling though.

Does anyone here still buy print music media, out of interest?

How are Akon and Kanye West not pop? I'd argue for Jay-Z and R Kelly too, but the first two are surely as pop as pop gets nowadays.

Those are ALL pop! viz they have been played on Hits!TV with the intention of selling rekkids to pop lovers.

Yes, they're all pop but it's quite a snobbish view of pop - their media pack is quite clear that they won't cover certain types of pop (I've deleted it now and can't remember exactly what they said; Girls Aloud may have been mentioned)

Really? That seems a very odd decision - why cut yourself off from part of an audience and also a point of difference vs yr main weekly competitor? Especially as the Popworld programme features that stuff (doesn't it?)

Yes, Popworld does cover that stuff, although seeing as I haven;t watched it recently I'm not sure if the new presenters treat that sort of thing in the same way Simon & Miquita used to; from what I've seen it appears to be a bit more self-consciously cool than it used to.

I imagine they are consciuosly excluding types of pop that are perceived by certain types as uncool so that it doesn't get written off as 'the new smash hits' by some of their audience for whom pop is a dirty word (most of the above artists can be described quite accurately as pop, but I bet a lot of their fans would strongly deny it)

I don't think their covering Girls Aloud (or Sugababes) would be evidence of anything - both those acts, like Kylie, aren't really "uncool" pop, or at least they're uncool in the right ways, or at least enough to be everyone's token cheesy pop act.

Really uncool pop is Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson, Paris Hilton and so on.

As proof of how weak-minded the 18-25 advertising bracket in this arena may be, I just got very excited about The Automatic being on the cover and didn't even look at anything else beyond the fact the colour scheme was quite jolly. :/

First mention of Red Hot Chilli Peppers in a non-derogatory fashion'd have me ceasing my readership. See also bloogy Foo Fighters, Editors, Fratellis, Just Jack, Oasis, R Kelly because clearly they're trying to be ironic and appeal to THEM KER-AZY STUDENTS with the Trapped In The Closet qualifier, The %^$^^*&(*&)(*ing View or Wolfmother. This has now put me off the whole thing.

Someone make me stop writing about this and go and write my essay, plz.
