Quite bewilderingly unpleasant article which claims to be about 'pop' from The Village Voice. Makes me long for the discretionary principle -- if you can't say anything nice, say nothing. (It may be a joke I haven't understood because of not being asleep at a stupid hour of the morning, but I suspect not.)

I think that guy is just trying to make Frank Kogan sad.

So many other things have made me sadder, though. The article is a joke, of course. But it blows anyway. Or it blows especially.

It has lashings of that toxic brashness which seems to infect a lot of nu-Voice writing (though of course mostly I'm following links to the bad stuff from apalled commentators...)

Well Rob Harvilla's stuff isn't like that very much, but a lot of the stuff in his section is, which is weird. It's also weird because the writing style is basically the same as another NY paper, the NY Press. That paper doesn't have very good music coverage (actually it's fairly embarassing), but the tone in this Voice piece (and Chris Ott's pieces for the Voice) is roughly the NY Press's tone for everything, especially poltics and movies. This is weird because the NY Press is a failing paper, so I don't know why you'd want to imitate it.

Whatever anyone says, though, Fall Out Boy get a break, because they came out of a local emo/hardcore scene with real mosh pits and everything, and anyone who can't appreciate a good mosh pit is a dick.

this sounds like the nu-voice QUEST FOR AUTHENTICITY in a nutshell.

but seriously, who writes like this? it's all pose and no ... anything. see also the newest voice music blog (http://www.livejournal.com/blogs/music), which i quoted to some friends yesterday.

The authentic voice of the 14 year old music blogger is to be found on the Emo Kids comment thread on FT I think!
