Jop Tournament Qualifiers 8

The last bunch of qualifiers for the last four places.

Voting's now closed in batches 6 and 7, and the following go through (deep breath): Utah Saints, New Order, ABC (beating Kylie! by one vote!), Xtina, Outkast, MIA (beating Stardust in a brutally tight group), Daft Punk (overhauling Missy) and Little Red Corvette.

Gamma: I'm in a Sinead mood today, something a little more...ballady.

Delta: PSB, quite easily. No surprises there I'm sure.

Epsilon: Pink over ODB, this time, I'm a bit bored of ODB.

Omega: I'm not bored of either S'n'P or Gwen, but S'n'P probably won't need my vote to win here.

I nearly ticked Emineminem but went for MARRS because it was on the radio this morning and remains GREBT.

Divinyls are fun but Cypress gets the tick.

Pink's only good song.

I like Gwen but SnP are legends - I like this song less than eg Lets Talk About Sechs but SnP deserve to go through and obv this is the only song with which they shall achieve this.

Gamma: Pretty easy, 'Nothing Compares 2 U' is towering.
Delta: 'Go West' not one of my favourite PSB though I do like it; 'I Touch Myself' is fabulous
Epsilon: Best of the groups, but still easy because 'Got Your Money' is such a standard. Realised a few months ago that GYM is the song which links every sort of party together these days - I've heard it at hip-hop nights, Poptimism, dropped as a token hip-hop track in house sets, and I can imagine it's also token hip-hop in indie nights. And it ALWAYS gets EVERYONE dancing.
Omega: Hang on did we miss out some letters? Er 'Push It' is untouchable, basically.

Looking at the spreadsheet all four of these groups lead into ridiculously harsh draws, I think S'n'P is the only song here which stands the remotest chance of surviving.

Though I may be wrong.

I have never heard the ABC song in question but I'm actually v happy about the SHOCK! FIRST! ROUND! UPSET! of K Minogue.

GAMMA: Can't call between MARRS and Sinead - MARRS has stronger Now poll pedigree though.

DELTA: Pixies romping ahead, which is a bit of a surprise.

EPSILON: ODB in command, which isn't.

OMEGA: I was expecting Salt n Pepa to have a clearer run!

INDIE WINS, POPTIMISTS FORCED TO CLOSE UP SHOP

I did feel kind of dirty but nothing else in that group is really that great. Divinyls kinda, but "Monkey Gone to Heaven" is just a great song. More pop acts should cover the Pixies.

I would be happy if the Pixies won, "Debaser" wd have been even better but I have a long-standing fondness for "Monkey".

I think the line was sadly crossed a long time ago! I am surprised at the margin of victory but though this is the Wrong Result we have had worse travesties. Pixies aren't really even that indie, I quite like them.

I didn't realize the definition of indie was "something Lex doesn't like" - the Pixies were quite indie (for that period, anyway).

Not yet but having been the recipient of several "do you like it then?" emails this week I am fully expecting to be deluged with hatemail from angry Klaxons PRs.

It's not that these seem "hard" as much as I find it difficult to rationalize my choice of one song over another.

GAMMA: Three "classics" but I guess right now I'll go with Sinead/Prince, whereas...

DELTA: Bothered? The only one of these I'd miss is Pixies.

EPSILON: Lose Yourself really is good, isn't it? But I get such a visceral rush from Pink (probably in my Poptimist Canon, as long as I don't forget - this was the easy group for me.

OMEGA: Also a yawner. I just don't get Gwen on her own at all. Salt'n'Pepa, although without much enthusiasm (just seems so dated somehow, although I'm sure Sinead is too).

I think poor Busta is scuppered here by being up against an even better hip-hop classic (Push It) and an even better big stupid shoutathon (Where's Your Head At).

Can't be doing with Gwen but I'm surprised at the poor showing for White Town here.
