Jop Tournament Qualifiers 5
Jan. 24th, 2007 11:21 amFour more groups, sixteen more contenders - Eminem in there twice, and a Chic vs Chic contest in Group S.
In yesterday's first groups, convincing wins for G'n'R, Eurythmics, and TLC, plus Nirvana edging "Beat It" by one vote (take a bow
insaneplatypus) and the Beastie Boys just about qualifying as least disliked.
[Poll #913043]
More later - the charts poll is late this week cos I haven't heard the records, it will usually be on a Wednesday though.

Date: 2007-01-24 11:33 am (UTC)Q: Far from my favourite DC song, so it's between Nelly and Slim, and I'm more in a Shady mood right now.
R: Bored of Kelis (tho it'll probably win), Sabotage isn't all that without the video, middle-ranking prince so Lauryn takes it by default.
S: Only genuine dilemma of the batch - "Vogue" is awesome but for now I'm ticking "Good Times" for the strings.
T: Girl vs Girls - "Wannabe" a landmark but I'll take Gwen's bittersweet update today.

Date: 2007-01-24 11:44 am (UTC)R: Proper dilemma between Lauryn and Kelis - resolved by remembering exactly how blown away I was by 'Milkshake' the first 30 times I heard it, they way it didn't wear off for about two years, and that I prefer other Lauryn songs to this one ('Ex Factor', 'Lost Ones')
S: would be really really hard if it wasn't for the fact that it's VOGUE. Come on, this pwns the world. STRIKE A POSE.
T: V hard but v apt choice between Obnoxious Dumb Fun 96 and Obnoxious Dumb Fun 05! "UH-HUH THIS MAH SHIT" v "YOOOOOO I TELL YA WHAT I WANT WHAT I RILLYRILLY WANT"; "b-a-n-a-n-a-s" v "zig-ah-zig-ah". 'Hollaback Girl', just, only just.

Date: 2007-01-24 12:07 pm (UTC)'blindfold me' is such a tenuous single - never released in physical form anywhere, I think it only counts because some US radio stations picked up on it and a video was made!

Date: 2007-01-24 02:49 pm (UTC)R - Ticked "Milkshake", easy. I don't even really like the other songs.
S - ANOTHER extremely tough 4 way battle here, where I had a reasonable argument for ticking any of the 4. I went with "Upside Down" since it has probably my favorite Chic beat.
T - Ticked "Wannabe" barely over Gwen. Not a big Portishead or Run DMC fan.

Date: 2007-01-24 03:10 pm (UTC)Nirvana - Sorry, but this is one of the very greatest rock songs of all time. I know you don't like rock, but some of us do and this is great. Really catchy too, so it's also a great pop song!
GnR - I don't like that Dizzee song at all, and I'm kinda meh on the Jaxx in general. Which left it to "Survivor" and "Sweet Child O Mine" which I spent way too long deliberating between. "Survivor" is amazing, for sure, but "Sweet Child O Mine" has that powerhouse riff...I went with "Sweet Child O Mine" ultimately, though I switched back and forth a couple times. I think a lot of people here aren't big fans of "Survivor" and went with GnR by default, for what it's worth. I doubt it will make it past the next round. "Sweet Child O Mine" = catchy, cliche though not bad lyrics, good rock singing, best guitar riff ever.
