Is this a recognisable 2006? Not if yr a Brit voter, most probably. (EDIT: I stand corrected, yrs Grandad.) I'm not sure I've ever heard TV on the Radio (who topped the JP albums list).

How can they be album votes if most people voted for the actual properly released single?

Uh, right, what you said. TV on the Radio at #5 is what particularly makes me think this, and I think Maura commented on how weird it was too. They're not exactly a singles band, and I don't really remember anyone talking about how that was a particularly killer song.

Yeah, exactly. A lot of those are definitely good songs but not really singles. There's stuff that's trying to be a single and that seems to be why there's a separate poll for singles, so you can highlight things that are working in that mode.

Of course, now that I've said this I realize that some of the ones I listed were probably conceived as singles (Raconteurs, Lupe, Dixie Chicks, Pipettes) so maybe I'm being unfair. But like, that Dixie Chicks song isn't even the best single from that album, it's just that picking that one best expresses why you think the Dixie Chicks are awesome.

Instinctively, I rage against this line of thinking. But this is more to do with my annoyance at critics not taking alBUMs by e.g. Nelly or Paris or Aly & AJ as seriously as they take those by indie types than because I want to see TVOTR on a singles ballot.

The highlight-the-singles-act argument works better if you're considering an artist like Fedde Le Grand or something, who isn't likely to be making an LP any time soon. But I doubt he got many votes anyway.

oddly enough I found that I loved a lot of indie-ish singles this year but didn't find myself as enamoured of the album as a whole (The Gossip, CSS, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Amy Winehouse to an extent) whereas a lot of big pop albums I loved as albums as well as loving their singles (Beyoncé, Paris, Justin, Cassie, Ciara) and in some cases more than their singles (Kelis, Fergie). The exception is Nelly F's album which doesn't work so well as an album BUT is a pretty awesome disparate-singles-on-one-CD item.

'Staring At The Sun' by TV On The Radio (buried within Ultramix 04) is good but I didn't like what I heard of their latest album.
