Is this a recognisable 2006? Not if yr a Brit voter, most probably. (EDIT: I stand corrected, yrs Grandad.) I'm not sure I've ever heard TV on the Radio (who topped the JP albums list).

Date: 2007-01-09 04:37 pm (UTC)Anyway I guess it's the equivalent of that noticeable trend in the old P&J singles polls we've been looking at, of a group of critics who clearly took one look at the singles ballot and thought "Shit, what's Paul Simon been up to this year?" rather than having any engagement with 'singles' or 'the charts' as an idea.

Compiled during new dad madness so it's a miracle I had it together to submit anything: next year I'll do comments, honest.

Date: 2007-01-09 04:51 pm (UTC)Of course, now that I've said this I realize that some of the ones I listed were probably conceived as singles (Raconteurs, Lupe, Dixie Chicks, Pipettes) so maybe I'm being unfair. But like, that Dixie Chicks song isn't even the best single from that album, it's just that picking that one best expresses why you think the Dixie Chicks are awesome.

Date: 2007-01-09 05:17 pm (UTC)Instinctively, I rage against this line of thinking. But this is more to do with my annoyance at critics not taking alBUMs by e.g. Nelly or Paris or Aly & AJ as seriously as they take those by indie types than because I want to see TVOTR on a singles ballot.
The highlight-the-singles-act argument works better if you're considering an artist like Fedde Le Grand or something, who isn't likely to be making an LP any time soon. But I doubt he got many votes anyway.
