2004 is now THREE YEARS AGO (sort of) - our possibly penultimate pazz and jop ponderations will let you relive that golden or otherwise era. You get THIRTEEN from thirty-eight picks: Alicia Keys "You Don't Know My Name" and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Maps" turned up last time so are omitted this.

Poptimism Of Times Past - 2003 Edition

1. Crazy In Love (43 votes)
2. Milkshake (37)
3. Cry Me A River (35)
4=. Ignition (Remix) (31)
4=. Hey Ya! (31)
6. Move Your Feet (30)
7=. Hurt (27)
7=. I Luv U (27)
9=. In Da Club (24)
9=. Danger High Voltage (24)
9=. Rock Your Body (24)
9=. Pass That Dutch (24)

This scientifically confirms my empirical findings at the work Xmas party viz that "Crazy In Love" is much loved again but that people are bored of "Hey Ya". This one will run and run.

The transition between the Strokes intro and the chugga chugga angular rest of it is one of the most clunky, cringey things I've ever heard in pop music? I can see why people like it (though not why the forgive the insufferable vocals) but more than 'Goodies'? No way no way no way.

For me, the intro is what made me love the song - takes it to Kinks sadness. I think FF's herky-jerkiness ultimately undercuts them - reminds me too much of early T*lking H**ds, though it's interesting, contains at least the idea of delerium. But those aren't their only elements. One of the best tracks from the first alb is the overlooked "Auf Asche," whose synth part could have come from Stacey Q-Jon St. James, which means disco-based club music rather than electropop-based club music, which means richer and more beautiful and better. (They couldn't really find a way to get the vocal line to go well with the synth, however.)

Interestingly enough I heard a bit of Josef K and Gang Of Four around this time (kept seeing their names cited as "people FF ripped off"), and while I can't say they made a huge impact on me I did enjoy them a lot more than FF. FF always seemed slightly too pleased with themselves, very arch and diffident - this is the kind of thing I don't mind when the music is minimal, but when you've got big pop tunes it completely undercuts them.
