[identity profile] freakytigger.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] poptimists

Two somewhat difficult categories to administer today - the "argument of the year", difficult because only one thing really got widely nominated. And the "thing to dance (to)", difficult because nothing got nominated twice!

Here are the 'argument' nominees.

The Paris Hilton Wars: Is PH's album a triumph or a travesty? Should it be taken seriously? What are the hataz really playing at? Here's The Lex vs Plan B, and Dave Moore on Paris at Stylus.
Indie vs Emo in the Freaky Trigger Comments Box: This one will run and run. Delve in here and here.
Lordi: Worthy Eurovision Winners?: The argument that tore the Eurovision community apart - pantomime or "real rock"? And is that a good thing anyway? If anyone can point me to evidence for this argument I'd be grateful.

As for the dance to nominees...

"Monster" is a rock song about a hill and a monster.
"We Are Your Friends" is a much-loved golden oldie.
"Chicken Noodle Soup" is big on YouTube.
Magda is a tea-making DJ.
"We Share Our Mother's Health" is Scandiravian.

[Poll #893038]

You can still vote in earlier polls and nominate for the remaining categories.

No, that's the way livejournal works. There've already been a couple of subthreads of responses to the post of mine you were responding to, and since those subthreads were posted first, livejournal places your post way down after the subthreads. I hate a lot of things about livejournal, and I basically wish that the Poptimist crew hadn't abandoned ilX, but at this point ilX probably is hopelessly mediocre and stupid, with the exception of the rolling threads, which have created their own worlds. I think the ungainliness of livejournal, in preventing us from elaborating on our ideas and extending a conversation, keeps the tone light, like a game, which for better or worse is what the Poptimists want. There's sort of a rolling country thread in exile on email at the moment, where Xhuxk was complaining about Poptimists (too much multiple choice, not enough essay). But Poptimists and the rolling ilx threads have different virtues. Um, I'm off on a tangent. Anyway, as for Ashlee and Paris, Ashlee herself is more interesting than Paris, but Paris hate and Ashlee hate are somewhat different species. Ashlee's vulnerable and she visibly suffers, while trying to model a story of uplift, and the stuff that complicates or runs counter to that - her being probing and moralistic and analytical and demanding - hasn't made it to the general discussion about Ashlee. Her sin is that she's invaded rock, basically. Of course, for the people who think that the pop world is inherently phony, Ashlee and Paris are probably interchangeable as objects of hatred and derision. But Paris doesn't play the humility game (or when she does, no one notices). In real life, it may turn out that Ashlee's the stronger of the two - in her EPK Paris said she'd always wanted to do music but had been afraid to! - but Paris represents strength and doesn't seem nearly as accessible as Ashlee. She's more like, "Austria is great because they pay me to go to parties." (But remember, I've never seen either Ashlee's or Paris's reality shows, which might reveal totally different aspects.)
