The Poptimists Review Of The Year 2006: Dancing about Arguetexture

Two somewhat difficult categories to administer today - the "argument of the year", difficult because only one thing really got widely nominated. And the "thing to dance (to)", difficult because nothing got nominated twice!

Here are the 'argument' nominees.

The Paris Hilton Wars: Is PH's album a triumph or a travesty? Should it be taken seriously? What are the hataz really playing at? Here's The Lex vs Plan B, and Dave Moore on Paris at Stylus.
Indie vs Emo in the Freaky Trigger Comments Box: This one will run and run. Delve in here and here.
Lordi: Worthy Eurovision Winners?: The argument that tore the Eurovision community apart - pantomime or "real rock"? And is that a good thing anyway? If anyone can point me to evidence for this argument I'd be grateful.

As for the dance to nominees...

"Monster" is a rock song about a hill and a monster.
"We Are Your Friends" is a much-loved golden oldie.
"Chicken Noodle Soup" is big on YouTube.
Magda is a tea-making DJ.
"We Share Our Mother's Health" is Scandiravian.

Paris was the "victim" of the sex tape in the sense that it was the guy that released it and not her. And she publicly complained, was embarrassed about it, etc. But it was (and still is?) widely suspected that she had some sort of hand in the release of it, due to the fact that it helped out her career. Seems like rubbish, after-the-fact cause and effect analysis to me, but whatever. (Like how people think Coke deliberately tanked New Coke in order to increase sales when the brought back the classic).

Important to note that contrary to what has been stated upthread, Paris WAS a notable public figure (at least in America) prior to the release of the sex tape. I don't even know that the sex tape really increased her exposure that much (again, maybe it's different across the pond).

Well, I'm an American and first I heard of her was the sex tape, which surfaced a couple of weeks before her program first aired. So my impression is that she was someone who suddenly went from slightly famous to very famous, the sex tape being what did it. But I wasn't monitoring that part of the culture very closely at the time, so I don't really know.

Well point taken, so it did clearly increase her profile to some extent. But I and my friends knew who she was well before the whole sex tape fiasco. So I guess it extended her fame/noteriety from beyond those interested/knowledgable in general pop culture to the general populace?

Yeah. SNL probably did that for Ashlee. Saying "shit" on TV is what did it for the Sex Pistols. Knifing Nancy Spungen to death is what did it for Sid Vicious.
