cos it's really great! In any other year I probably would have ticked it, and one of the amazing things about it is how it really could have been released in any other year - in fact I thought it came out a good two or three years earlier. It's very much the definition of a certain type of college-indie-rock (that for me starts with weezer's 'buddy holly'): aggressively tuneful, punk-pop without the punk- part, masculine-immature... good stuff.

It's the puerile nature of it which I can't stand, I guess it depends on how funny you find 10-year-old rough-and-tumble boy humour. I hated it when I was 10 and I hate it now and I comfort myself with the fact that practitioners of it surely never get laid.

I hated in when I was 10! Oddly teaching 10 year-olds has really changed my mind, I am super fond of it now. It's just... how they talk? And they're great, because everyone is, so it must be, too.

'and one of the amazing things about it is how it really could have been released in any other year'

ha ha, is that really a virtue? i mean i get that it's often nice to have that sense of 'timelessness' or whatever but still...

'Buddy Holly' seems a lot 'smarter' than 'Stacey's Mom' but i don't think of them as connected really. 'Stacey's Mom' doesn't seem like college-rock more than highschoolfreshman-rock. i'm being very snobby here i'm sure!

really tho i wonder just what it is that makes me like the Ted Leo track but hate this (i know they're different in certain ways but still). not just being a rockist about rock i hope.

really the reason i dislike 'Stacey's Mom' probably doesn't go far beyond the same reasons why i hated 'That's What I Go To School For' when that first came out. carry on.
