Yeah since EVEN AT THE TIME I knew that only the first three songs on DS were any good I think #2 was an overreaction. But those three songs were INCREDIBLY GOOD, or so I thought back then. My not listening to them now is about 50% 'preserve a happy memory' after the rubbishness of all follow-ups and the horrors of Grandaddy et al.

That song on DS, I think it's track three, with the Silent Night bit, is cloying and sickly and horrible. There were far better moments later in the album IIRC.

I might listen to it tonight just to check.

Cloying and sickly and horrible were EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED! The ones I like are the ones that sound like some kind of horribly hungover and damaged versions of Disney tunes (the wankiness of this description is exactly why I fear hearing them again). All the other stuff is just pub rock.

While the first three songs are unbeatable, I think the rest of the album isn't quite the pub-rock comedown you remember it being, especially the last song -- "Delta Riverboat Stomp Something". I've heard a live MP3 of a where they ditch the Reich-house and turn it into a Creedence uptempo choogle.

The real horror isn't even Grandaddy so much as MR repeating themselves again and again. They've deluded themselves into thinking that DS (and really, just the second half) was all they ever need to do ever again.

Anyway, DS arrived at a rilly awful time in my life so it is sadly one of things that I can't criticize fairly without tearing my tiny little heart in two.
