bah

1989 - De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising - still got on (original!) TAPE only
1991 - Nirvana - Nevermind
1993 - Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville - given away, rub
1995 - PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love - the first one of hers i didn't wholly love
1996 - Beck - Odelay - meh
1999 - Moby - Play - fab

Moby has a bad name around these parts (planet Earth), but of these I think Moby's would be my favourite.

'Honey' off Play is terrific, at least the version with Kelis on it.

TBYML is like the PINNACLE of Peej's career! Her 1995-98 output is astonishing, still.

dry /rid of me / 4track demos totally ruled my world, and i was totally wrong footed by the direction of TBYML. i went to see her touring it tho, and she was amazing (may have seen her at glasto at this point too - it was her pink catsuit era). i even went as far as buying the next alBUM (louse point) and by then it had killed my interest.

after constant media attention i bought stories from the city, but really she's just not doing it for me any more. it happens

i can see how you'd have been wrong-footed - TBYML was the first PJ I ever heard though so it was precisely this mannered, theatrical, rather bleak aesthetic with undertones of hysteria rather than overt emotional rocking-out catharsis which drew me in (and louse point and desire are shades of the same thing - I might even prefer ITD because it's such a successful electronic departure).

I like Stories but it doesn't deserve any more than that lukewarm defence. Uh Huh Her is 'interesting' and 'admirable' rather than something you ever want to listen to
