I decided to do a Jop poll after all, so here's 1997. With "Lovefool" left off for appearing twice, you have nine picks on twenty-five songs - a generous allowance!

[Poll #861316]

Joptimism 1996: Predictable, Us?

1. Common People (38 votes)
2=. California Love (33 votes)
2=. Born Slippy (33 votes)
4. Lovefool (31)
5. No Diggity (30)
6. Woo Hah! Got You All In Check! (28)
7. Setting Sun (23)
8. 1979 (20)
9=. Ready Or Not (19)
9=. Macarena (19)

Thank heaven the Macarena scraped in there ahead of Beck!]

TYPO ERROR: That should be "Cornershop" doing Brimful of Asha, not Chumbawamba - apologies for Cornershop and all their fans. Also it's "Da Funk" not "The Funk". Mondays, eh.

A massive YAY for Double 99 Ripgroove!

I always preferred Stuka to Kowalski though.

Tom, you're practically the one who convinced me #2 and #18 were awesome!

I'd forgotten all about 3. I still have the white label 12 somewhere -- does the MVE basement still exist? I must make a pilgrimage there next time in London. OK not the next time in London, as I'll be on my way to Heathrow, but the time after.

19 is still awesome. Porter Ricks definitely stand the test of time.

The video for 3 cracks me up (sidewalk rudeness at its best). 3 is also the only track on Tom's list I remember hearing.

I still like 'Tricky Kid'! It doesn't sound like a whinge to me, I think the galloping rhythm saves it here, it does sound very paranoid though.

i still love 'Bombin Bastards' from the '4 Real' single - anything samples 'Assault On Precinct 13' = great

can't remember how his cover of M's 'Pop Muzik' (also from that single) was but probably less great

'Christiansands' is still ace. Basically anything by Tricky but with a female vox (esp. Martine and inc. 'Broken Homes' with PJ) will never stop being good. His stuff without this element does tend to not stick as well.

A pleasant surprise to see two of my favourite drum & bass tracks of that year in there!
