Like a hedgehog shaking itself awake after the long winter, the part of my brain marked "Liking Hip-Hop" awoke from dormancy over the weekend, and now I want to know what I've been missing out on. Anyone want to fill me in on the best tracks of '06 so far?

ALSO - Now 65 is out in a week or two, so today's Jop poll may be a NOW poll (or may not exist, dependent on how much work I have). We've polled all the songs on it before, obviously.

I assume you've heard the big TI and Chamillionaire and Dem Franchize Boyz tracks?

Lupe Fiasco - Kick Push (and a bunch of other stuff from his album which is pretty excellent)
Remy Ma - Conceited
Rasheeda - Georgia Peach
The Coup - My Favorite Mutiny
JME - Pence
Skream ft Warrior Queen - Check It (this is dubstep really)
Field Mob ft Ciara - So What

also just got the Pitbull album in the post which looks promising.

yeah that's the one. TI's 'What You Know' and DFB's 'OH I Think They Like Me' were failry early this year.

I've fallen off on hip-hop a bit this year too to be honest.

Oh I forget, obviously, all the hyphy stuff! I haven't heard much but what I have heard is amazing.

Balance - Let The Bass Go
E40 - Da Dummy
Mistah Fab - City Limits

Really want to hear the E40 album.

i loved that E40 one, but is the title correct? couldn't find any info on it when i googled.

I think it is - it doesn't appear to be on the album though...

Mine so far (in no particular order)

Chamillionaire - Ridin Dirty
T.I. - Why You Wanna (Crystal Waters sample)
Chris Brown - Run It
Rhymefest & Kanye - Brand New
the new Jay-Z one that I can't remember the name of
Busta Rhymes - Touch It
Mariah Carey - Say Somethin
Cassie - Me & You

I know most of this is RnB and not HipHop but whatevs.

My brain classifies that as pop! Same with Deja-vu and Rhianna and J-Lo-LL-Cool-J.

Conceited seconded

Some of these are old, but Rick Ross 'Hustlin', Young Jeezy 'Trap Star', 334 Mobb 'Chevy 4 door', Juvenile 'Get Your Hustle On'.

The Jedi Mind Tricks album is great, nostalgic horror-core in a gravediggaz stylee; Lupe Fiasco album is a bit dull and worthy sounding but 'Mean & Vicious' and some other bits of the 'revenge of the nerds' mixtape are awesome; some of the E-40 album is good; the Ghostface album is hugely overrated.

Yeah both the big TI singles are HUGE: 'what you know', 'why you wanna'

I can't stand that Lupe Fiasco song that has Jill Scott burbling away over the SAME BETA BAND/I MONSTER SAMPLE that has been used a grillion times over.

That one is pretty boring yes, but 'Kick Push' and 'The Instrumental' and 'Cool' and 'He Say She Say' and 'American Terrorist' are all very very good indeed!

Albumwise, TI, Juvenile, and Bubba Sparxxx are all hot. The Lupe Fiasco album is good if you found Paul Barman a little too ghetto. You know "Stay Fly" already if I remember right... the Sway album is _good_ if not as great as his mixtapes (yeah, the modern rapper's curse), avoid his remix of "LDN" but most of his other beatjacks this year have been good to great. Tanya Morgan are great in a jazzy woozy not-really-hip-hop way. Album of the year is Boss Hog Barbarians' "Every Hog Has Its Day", but that ain't poptimism ("Fuck a 40 ounce, your crew'll be pouring out whole kegs of brew")

Oh, and rap single of the year is still "Snook Svett Och TÃ¥rar", Swedish 93-era rapping over Northern Soul horns.

Bubba Sparxxx? Really? I was looking forward to it but the single was just...so meh.

I am aware that Lupe Fiasco is TOTALLY NERDY but I love his album and cannot help it. But I am a total sucker for that opulent sample-heavy Kanye-sound.

Oh yeah, Spank Rock, of course, though I have returned to the album less than I thought I would and probably prefer Amanda Blank.

UFFIE OF COURSE

Which single, "Ms New Booty"? After "Deliverance" went triple-wood, he wanted a really bandwagon hopping chart-aimed track to lead off this album. S'not representative of the album at all, and it's one of only two bad tracks on it (the other's the one with Ray J talking about how ABORTION IS TEH BAD). Download "The Otherside" and "While The Rims Spin".

yeah 'Ms New Booty'. I think I downloaded a version with Ying Yang Twins AND Sean Paul on it and it was still underwhelming. What are the beats like on the album?

(Perennial failing in listening to hip-hop - I only listen to the beats and the arrangements for like three months, and then the lyrics hook me in. Or not. But it doesn't ever seem to matter. I've never got into a hip-hop track lyrics-first.)

Getting into dancehall territory but...

...the Cham single 'Ghetto Story' is really excellent (as is the rmx with Alicia Keys). Album pretty good too.

Actually, Tom, although it's 2005, I'd bet heavily that you'd like "The Mind of Mannie Fresh", it's an amazing album full of that kinda late 90s Cash Money fetishizing with the best album-running set of skits I've ever heard (Mannie Fresh is trying to do an album for the laydeez, every time he leaves the room Lil Wayne gets on the mic and starts rapping about stabbing prostitutes in the eye).

How good is Lil Wayne generally? I like what I've heard, I love a solo track called 'Earthquake' I think, I love the track he did with Trina (her album might count actually! only released in the UK this year; it's no Diamond Princess but what is; 'I Gotta' and 'Don't Trip' and 'Da Club' are all ace).

Lil Kim released 'Whoa' as a single this year too, and it's INC-RED-I-BLE.

Remy Ma ft Lil Wayne, Trina, Papoose, and Jae Millz- "Conceited". If you don't like that I'll be shook.

OOOOOOHHH. I love her own 'Conceited', got an mp3 of this rmx?

Remy Ma's album is not so great though. Still, "who's that lookin' in my window? NOBODY COS I LIVE IN A PENTHOUSE" is one of the best lines this year.

I might have to get this - I've got 'Real Big' and it's one of the best things I've heard this year...

I would heartily recommend 'Club Stuntin' by Traxamillion and The Pack - can provide an MP3...
