the patti smith song is officially "not bad" in an anthemic kind of way

i interviewed ofra haza round this time, but don't think i can have written it up -- i don't recall a thing she said, tho she was very charming

Have you watched that Galbi video yet?

The Patti Smith song was weighed-down by its accompaniment; she seemed to be wanting that "Born To Run" wall-of-sound effect.

Mark, have you watched that "Galbi" video yet?

i like 'People Have The Power' enough to tick it but I think its rather obvious LOOK AN ANTHEM feel is actually what lets it down compared to most P Smith works - she seems to be better when she's being less, um, is earthy the word? More abstract? I don't even know what my favourite Patti Smith song is.

More discursive? More flighty? More playground? More rap? My favorite Patti is "Piss Factory."

Flighty, maybe - I was going to put that my favourite Patti is 'Piss Factory' too but then I remembered 'Because The Night' so I don't know. And um the epic one on Horses which goes "horses! horses! horses!" - you may be able to tell that I haven't listened to her for a while, this will have to change.

I also really like her cover of 'When Doves Cry'!

But "Because The Night" is anthemic. (It's good mind you, but definitely anthemic.)

It's romantic-anthemic rather than political-anthemic though! ie much less liable to be heavy-handed.

Given all the gaps in your musical knowledge, Alex, and your hatred of guitars, my mind is boggled at the fact that you both know and like anyone so RAWK and commercially irrelevant as Patti Smith.

As I have said many times a WOMAN SINGER is usually enough to cancel out horrid guitars (further examples: PJ Harvey, Courtney Love, Karen O, Ashlee Simpson, Kelly Clarkson)

Think of Axl Rose as a woman singer.
