[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] poptimists

Live Aid wouldn't have been the same without them! Cocaine dwarves, white vests and operatics worthy of Pavarotti have all made Queen legendary in UK pop history. Everyone's Dad loves Queen, but which of their staggering 48 UK charting singles do [livejournal.com profile] poptimists heart the most? You get SIXTEEN ticks across all the boxes to denote your Queen love.

Re-issues are not listed unless it is a remixed version. I've also left off the two EPs (Queen's First EP and the George Michael/Lisa Stansfield thing) just because it fits better in the poll that way!

Under Pressure my favourite purely for its use in Grosse Pointe Blank - scene with cute baby in.

OK: I will fess up. I have never enjoyed a Queen record, and although I can boggle at the daftness of Bo-Rhap, it's surely responsible for more evil than good. Queen used to support Mott the Hoople, in the old days, and I would take any of Mott's silliest panto-rock tracks over a Queen album.

Strictly: I did quite like 'It's a Kind of Magic' when it came out. But I liked EVERYTHING at that point.

Well said. Queen are vile on both a musical and moral level: the worst group of all time. Mott are a billion times better, but at least we've been spared a Ben Elton musical called (inevitably) All the Young Dudes.

Cor, was Boh.Rap. only their fourth hit? Admittedly their first two were utter stormers, but I'd always assumed it was only released after a run of enormo-hits.

I only found half a dozen I wanted to tick, which quite surprised me - I've never been a big fan, but I sort of thought there were more I liked than that.

I managed 16 in the end but it was much harder than I expected.

1. If "Killer Queen" does not win, you are all MENTALISTS.
2. I ticked "Innuendo" even though I cannot remember how it goes, but I liked it when I was 10 and that's surely good enough.
3. I don't hate Boh.Rap but I don't want it to win.
4. Having said all this, the best Queen single is not as good as most 5ive singles, and "We Will Rock You" is rub in both versions.

Right on all four. Except the Innuendo bit.

I hated Queen at 13 - when the Kind of Magic album came out - and it took me about 15 years to get any kind of appreciation back!

Death on Two Legs is good

um, oh, what else... most of Night at the Opera TBH, although its all a bit mental.

STEER WELL CLEAR of taylor-penned and sung "i'm in love with my car" which is possibly even worse than it sounds...

A month or two ago I went to a birthday party for one of the musos here in Oxford - it was a Queen special theme, with all the gathered rest-of-Oxford's-young-musos singing Queen songs till closing time. Utterly fab and silly, and I was surprised by how many of the songs I knew & loved.

I downloaded Roger Taylor's 'Nazis' the other night. His 1994 solo album also has a song on it called 'DEAR MR. MURDOCH' (disappointingly not abut The A-Team)

You Don't Fool Me

I just wanted to plug this song, as it is a firm part of my euro-canon (along with "Looking for the Summer" by Chris Rea and some song by Niagara whose name I don't remember because I don't parlez). A rather atmospheric, under-the-radar song from the post-humous album that stuck in my head immediately upon hearing it (despite being unremarkable in most ways). I'd YSI if I could, but it's worth seeking out.

There are other Queen songs and singles I like better, but the "Bicycle races are coming to town..." section of this is my favourite BIT in any of their songs.

Has ever a band carried on after the death of a key member and been worse at it than post-Freddie Queen?
