A couple of people have pegged "Sign O The Times" as most important, which intrigues me, as Prince was already huge, and he never really did much of the 'social commentary' style stuff again afterwards, so SOTT sounds more like an intriguing one-off than a milestone.

I can understand people naming it as best (I've come to prefer both the other ones here though).

Matos's EXTREME dislike of SOTT (the song) amuses me but rankles. Yes, it's atypical Prince and I can allow for his need to compensate for the fact that ppl who didn't previously like Prince praised it to the skies. But come on.

He loves every other track on the LP of same name. He also loves the B-side of SOTT.

Xgau was aghast but not surprised that "Sign-O" beat "U Got The Look" - as it's doing here so far, which disappoints and surprises me.

It is "important" in the sense that it acknowledges something important, not in having much of an impact.

I ticked SOTT because it's Prince, but U Got the Look beats it by a country mile as far as singles go.
