i have always found em annoying until somone called BOB SNOOM popped up on ilm and referred to them as "my lovely bogshed" which made me like him (and them) until i heard their "music" again -- so i stole his phrase and use it for everyone else

that Snoom thread

they were "indie band with funny name" #1. others in the same list around that time: death by milk float, four heads in a fishtank, and ken dodd's dad's dog's dead

Have you still never heard "Set It Off? It's fabulous (though ignore the Jenny Holzerisms of this art video, which was the only thing I've found so far on YouTube that uses the song).

I'm surprised that "Set It Off" didn't make Pazz & Jop, given that it's the sort of leftfield dance track that NY critics tend to love. Like "Heartbeat." Perhaps Xgau's expanded the voter base enough that the NY critics were losing their clout. Also, I don't think it got airplay (unlike "Heartbeat," which was a bona fide radio hit in NY). I heard it because I read about it in the Voice.

The YouTube versions clipped off the famous beginning, which you probably have heard, sampled or copied: "Y'All wanna get this party started, RIGHT? Y'all wanna get this party started QUICKLY! RIGHT?" So this is telling you that the music must save you, this dance, this night. A lot like Shannon's "Let the Music Play." All this is what stuff like Madonna's "Get Into the Groove" springs from.

Er, but I misquoted it. Here's the real thing:

"Y'All want this party started, RIGHT? Y'All want this party started, QUICKLY! RIGHT?"
