Beware the savage jaw of 1984! The Pazz and Jop poll takes some curious turns this year with plenty to analyse in the comments boxes. For once no holdovers from last time or entries from the EP list, though I was sorely tempted to put Into Battle With The Art Of Noise in.

[Poll #823959]

The Joptimist Metapoll Remix (1983 Dub) is as follows:

1. Billie Jean (35 votes)
2. Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (34)
3. Little Red Corvette (30)
4. Beat It (28)
5. White Lines (Dont Dont Do It) (26)
6. It's Like That/Sucker MCs (21)
7. Burning Down The House (18)
8. Every Breath You Take (17)
9=. Lets Dance (16)
9=. Last Night A DJ Saved My Life (16)
9=. Do You Really Want To Hurt Me (16)

Much wider spread of voting last time btw.

so this is still pre-"soulboy" (polo and c0sgr0ve not yet on-board, or at least v.minor players) and pre-hiphop wars

soulvoters here = nme old-skoolers barney h, (the other) a.gill, dick cook, cindy, the two dannies --- tho i haven't checked, this is just a guess

Come 1986, we must switch over to the Melody Maker lists for a few years, I think. NME officially = CLUELESS for the second half of the 80s.

1984 was, unbelievably, the first year MM actually did a singles poll, and even then from 1984 through '86 only a Top 10.

Here's the '84 MM Top 10:
1. Frankie goes to Hollywood: Two tribes
2. Womack & Womack: Love wars
3. Echo & the Bunnymen: The killing moon
4. U2: Pride (in the name of love)
5. The Special AKA: Nelson Mandela
6. ZZ Top: Gimme all your loving
7. Orange Juice: What presence ?!
8. Bronski Beat: Smalltown boy
9. SOS Band: Just be good to me
10. Human League: The Lebanon

MM did also in the mid/late 80s, like Sounds had done before it, publish the staff writers' personal favourite tracks list. Here's a chuck eddy thread on ILM discussing part of the 1984 writers' lists:
