Beware the savage jaw of 1984! The Pazz and Jop poll takes some curious turns this year with plenty to analyse in the comments boxes. For once no holdovers from last time or entries from the EP list, though I was sorely tempted to put Into Battle With The Art Of Noise in.

[Poll #823959]

The Joptimist Metapoll Remix (1983 Dub) is as follows:

1. Billie Jean (35 votes)
2. Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (34)
3. Little Red Corvette (30)
4. Beat It (28)
5. White Lines (Dont Dont Do It) (26)
6. It's Like That/Sucker MCs (21)
7. Burning Down The House (18)
8. Every Breath You Take (17)
9=. Lets Dance (16)
9=. Last Night A DJ Saved My Life (16)
9=. Do You Really Want To Hurt Me (16)

Much wider spread of voting last time btw.

Like a Virgin came out in November, and I think P&J still had an early December cut-off date at the time. But more important, in 1984 she's still just club-music crossover as far as the world is concerned (Madonna mania is just starting, and Desperately Seeking Susan isn't until 1985). And when it comes to disco, P&J didn't and doesn't get it. As Stephen Thomas Erlewine points out at Allmusic, "it's been easy to overlook that Madonna began her career as a disco diva in an era that didn't have disco divas." So back in '83 "Everybody" could be a local hit in New York, "Holiday" and "Borderline" and "Lucky Star" could break out a bit, and still for practical purposes among rock critics she could be another Shannon or Jenny Burton, about whom P&J is just as indifferent.

Hmm. When I did my 1984 CDR, I avoided "Borderline" and "Lucky Star" because they were released in '83 (foolish mistake) and "Like a Virgin" because it always seemed to me to be more an '85 than '84 thing.
