A delay in the poll caused by my having some work, but finally the ship of retrospective metapop criticism sails into the waters of 1983 - Jackson the winner, Culture Club getting some serious vote-splitting, and this year the P&J poll included a BEST VIDEO section for the first time, which we might well discuss in a separate YouTube-enabled poll later (I can't get YouTube at work).

Procedural Note: I've excised "Back On The Chain Gang" by the Pretenders as it featured last time.

Or, you know, they were the least pansyist of all the Second British Invasion groups. A cynical and reductive explanation, I know, though it's actually sort of a seductive take on yr standard rock mulch (and still the worst thing I know from the list).

Yes, the Costello is grebt - his last (maybe last) pretty pop song.

White Lines is good cos it was the first hip-hop to get played at my school disco and it was the song where we all stood in a circle to watch the kids who could 'break' break. Also good bassline!

I think there may already be a bosh of BC - will check.

The Lyres were one of the first neo-garage-rock bands, modeling themselves on Sonics, Magicians, Strangeloves, Standells, and the like. Didn't do a bad job of it, and I recall interesting nonretro lyrics about relationships and life struggles. "How do you know you're gonna be big/How do you know the girls are gonna dig it?"

YES 'every breath you take' is totally a victim of KNEEJERK HATERATION here. it's terrific!

(i prefer the puff daddy/faith evans tribute to biggie but the original is v good too!)
