John Peel regularly said that Elton was one of the best honky-tonk piano players he'd ever known, and always wanted him to come in and play an instrumental session, but he never did.

Hmmm, sorry to be Mr Know-it-all-about-Elton on this thread, but in fact he did!

I stand semi-corrected - since there are backing singers on that, it's clearly not the instrumental session he was wanting. I wasn't listening to Peel then (before even my time!) and he kept saying over the later years that he had sent out feelers but never got anywhere. I may have forgotten his mentioning a session early in Elton's stardom.

The backing singers (Peel, Walters & co.) are only on the drunken demolition of 'Your Song' and 'Daniel'. The pub medley and the WOBS medley are 100% honkytonk joanner and no singing (can't remember what the Dylan medley was like, but more of the same I'll wager).

But I'm sure you're correct to say that Peel hoped to have more sessions from Elton in a similar vein that never happened. :)
