[identity profile] katstevens.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] poptimists
Last week you lovely Poptimist types decided that Return To Sender was the best #1 hit of 1962, with 25 ticks. But burger-munching jumpsuit wearer Elvis also fared least well, Good Luck Charm and She's Not You claiming only 3 ticks each. This week catapults us right into the booty-shaking, lesbian-filled pop-idle current decade: it's 2003!

I kind of like changes, because it's so completely artificial, Ozzy is truly more machine than man.

Also please confirm that this is Ignition rather than the remix, ie no "bounce bounce bounce" action.

it is the nature of these "is any goods" that often gives us runaway winners that too many ppl area actually "meh" about. i mean i voted for sugababes here, but it's hard to get excited about that song compared to at least 3 or 4 other winners here.

it was number one == it was ignition (remix), Ignition itself wasn't released as a single in t'uk, innit.

If Ozzy were more machine than man surely some of the vocals would be in tune rather than the awful flat caterwaul they are!

(ticks Ignition)

I mean, I don't like it enough to vote for it, but seeing Changes turn up in the "most hated" box is sort of odd, particularly considering it's above Mad World WHICH PEOPLE ARE VOTING FOR HOLY FVCKING CHR1ST!

That Will Young is as good a pop ballad as we have ever had, I think.

i quite like(d) sean paul, but not this song for some reason

Mad World's not actually that bad? As an incidental song in Donnie Darko it works really well: it's suffered a great deal from overplay/media saturation cos it doesn't hold up to constant hearings, being whiny and dull. Changes, on the other hand, is actively heinous.

Mad World not a patch on the original. Bah.

I think I should hand in my poptimist card. I voted only for Tatu because apart from Mad World that's the only one I recognised. And I'm not voting for Westlife doing a Barry Manilow cover, if that's what it is.

Blu & Sean was one of those songs which sold itself as generic and low-key r&b bobbins and then six months on you realise it = 1x MONSTER.

I forget it was even in Donnie Darko. All I see now is that STUPID FLATCAP and that awful low budget video (although the Gondry remake was great).
From: [identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com
never got the extent of love for 'leave right now'.

didn't like 'Ignition (Remix)' or 'Bring Me To Life' at all at first but ILM converted me to both.

No, it's not.

Blu & Sean / Elton

I ticked 'Breathe' but for the life of me I can't remember how it goes today.

Surprised by your hate for this Elton track, Lex. (I can see why you might dislike a lot of his other stuff, but this one is 1x poptastic disco classic.)

But that would have been a better idea!

This 'Changes' sounds a bit like 'Take It To The Limit' only twicw as slow. I don't hate it, but nor is it "any good at all".

Agreed. The original you can dance to.

i began the crazyinlove backlash when it came out, and am pleased to see it doing so well. however i did tick it cos it is still "any good at all". perhaps my interpretation of this is lower than others :-)

The 8/10 I drunkenly gave it in the Legendary Lost Hey Ya Focus Group haunts me to this day.

I clicked it.

Matt that focus group was conducted at about 2pm iirc so i question the legitimacy of this 'drunkenly' claim.

It is Kelly covering her dad. Pitiful. The Arab Strap version shows how the song should be done.

(Although I can probably get thrown out of [livejournal.com profile] poptimists just for mentioning the Strap.)

Is "any good at all" any good at all?

Westlife took a pretty good song and ruined it, but I ticked it anyway, 'cause it's a pretty good song.

Just kidding.

I don't use "any good at all" as my criterion, and I don't believe any of you do either, or we'd all be ticking a lot more. If something is "meh," I don't tick it. Nor do I tick something that's got good stuff in it but also has lots of bad stuff in it or that I actively hate for explicable or inexplicable reasons.

Also, I don't understand why there is so little reaction to Gareth Gates one way or another? Did he go to number one without any or you lisening (which is possible, if you still choose your number ones strictly on the basis of sales)?

Any of you listening, that is.
From: [identity profile] avv.livejournal.com
didn't Blu & Sean use the same sample as one of the better songs from DRE's 2001? (called "What's The Difference?" I think)

2003 was the year that going to a club = dancing to Sean Paul, so it gets a tick anyway.

Well I might tick that song, if the good stuff outweighs the bad. Which would also be one interpretation of "any good at all", although my interpretation is more like "everything except the meh tracks and the unremarkable ones".

I had a feeling of incompleteness listening to this version of "Spirit in the Sky," since I cannot help but connect the words "Spirit in the Sky" to "As Seen On TV!" and to "all this for $19.95, and not only that, you also get, absolutely free..." Perhaps this is an American phenomenon only.

(But I did tick the song. How could I not tick a disco version of "Spirit In The Sky"?)

I am now slightly regretting not saying 'Crashed The Wedding' was the best. I believe I was slightly swayed by remembering what a shitfest the video to 'You Said No' was.

I really do not like 'Hole In The Head.' It is obnoxiously boring, to my mind.

This really really is the best pop year ever? Every song here is great or better except the first and last which are a nice bookend I guess and 'Beautiful' which is just pretty good. I'm sort of amazed a year this good happened, ever, to be young ws etc etc.

I decided yesterday that it was time to bring the Focus Group back. Thankyou for reminding me of this!
