It seems that [livejournal.com profile] freakytigger isn't the only one getting in a tizzy as to what all this emo nonsense is about. Popjustice newsletter points us here:

Unsurprisingly the Mail has the "better" moral panic headline...

edit for our overseas viewers, the young lady in the picture on the mail story is a character in Coronation Street, the UK's longest running soap opera, who went goth about 9 months ago, having been sent to a posh school by her pushy mother. she is totally not emo.

i've just had an ace/knuckle-gnawing memory surface of one time I came back home from college and my mum and (step) dad (at the time) told me "we saw you on late night review" - apparently they had done a (probly paul morley narrated) "this is indie-dance crossover kid" and it was so accurate i couldn't really complain :-)

KIDS - YOU ALL DRESS THE FUCKING SAME ADMIT IT. i know i did :-)

Wait, Mark, you actually know someone who writes these things? Tell me more. My suspicion is that the "mistakes" in such articles are put there deliberately so that the discerning reader will recognize that the piece was written under duress and shouldn't be taken at face value. "The androgynous nature of the Goths is appealing to the young because it is sexually unthreatening." This is reminiscent of how the defendants in Soviet state trials of the '50s would insert patently absurd events in their confessions so that readers would know that the whole thing was a sham elicited by torture.

"Many of the alluring women of our time - Nigella Lawson, Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Lily Allen - have a touch of the Goth about them."

Rosie Webster is not even g0th anymore, her Mum's constant force-feeding of fish fingers and beans dispelled the darkness.

"The coolest people of my age are emo," explains fan Zoe Apostolides, 15. "They tend to be the middle-class intellectual kids who have started to view the world differently. They spend a lot of time in their bedrooms reading, but they also love films like Donnie Darko, or TV shows about death and horror such as Buffy or Six Feet Under."

Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck. It's not just my trainers that are emo then. Except that they failed to mention Supernatural there and it's the most awesomely emo show ever, Sam even looks like one.

That description's wrong, to my mind, actually- 'view the world differently' implies they've started reading Marx or something but in fact they've just decided that they'll have a lot of sex and then get upset about it so that they can be Just Like Pete Wentz, except of course they hate him and think he's a knob because no proper emo likes him. Or something.

Seriously, could The Daily Mail please employ writers with an ability to use proper actual paragraphs with more than one sentence in them? I gave up halfway down that article with flashbacks of three-line-rhyming epic 'The Inferno.'

How very emo of me.

AHAHAHA, sorry, I have to pull this bit apart, I hadn't noticed it before (from the Indie article):
THE NEW GOTH CULTURE

Bands:
The Horrors, My Chemical Romance, Funeral for a Friend, Alkaline Trio, Dirty Pretty Things

What about Bright Eyes?! Lostprophets, Taking Back Sunday, Fall Out Boy, The Used, Armor For Sleep, Pixies (I suspect, anyway, that they may have been hijacked by emo) Cute Is What We Aim For, Lacuna Coil, Evanescence, Linkin Park, Avenged Sevenfold, Alexisonfire, Hatebreed, District... the list goes on for literally hours and does not include Dirty Pretty Things, fer chrissakes.
