Has he ever written any song about sex? Bar the odd oblique reference eg 'Rent'.
He's very good on love-gone-wrong AND love-gone-right which is something of a rarity.
I think he's v bad at explicit politics (ugh the new album UGH - appalling lyrics) but v good at creating a political backdrop for more specific situations eg 'Opportunities'.
Also he can write songs that are happy and very sad at the same time, "Being Boring" obviously.
Yeah that song is in the Grand European Tradition of Songs About teh Life or something isn't it? I keep kicking myself for not digging into French chansonnerie -- like for you lot (I guess), this has only been Present for us up here through Eng-language sometimes but not always clumsy translations (hello Terry Jacks etc) except for perceived one-off oddities by people like Gainsbourg.
(The connotation Interesting (In This Way) Songs = French Songs is in itself dubitable though -- hows about German stuff? Dunno.)
("Three Wars" by M*m*s is also a brill lyric, I think, abt years and age and history and stuff.)

T's Good Political Songs

- "Dreaming of the Queen"
- "The Theatre" (a bit borderline this)
- "DJ Culture"
- "I Get Along"
You're right though that he's best at hinting at politics, creating a vaguely menacing backdrop that includes the political.
