Can you remember the world without Eminem? Without Fiddy? Without Madonna singing about her pilates classes? Then feast your eyes on the poll fodder below, taken from The Best Rap Album In The World... Ever!, released way back in 1996. Wot no Dre?

[Poll #798623]

Look, it's Friday. I NEED POLL ACTION.

The only ones I didn't tick are the ones I hadn't heard!

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BAD OLD-SCHOOL HIP-HOP SINGLE!

I'm not even sure what "old-school" mean any more...

anything older than ten years at any given time.

I find myself tending to agree with this comment.

Anyone who doesn't know all the words to both of these songs is off my Christmas list. A terminator like Arnold Schwarzanegar, tryna play me out like as if my name was Sega.

it always sounds to me more like "homie i'll wet ya" - but i'm not sure what that means.

Spitting: two meanings, both to rhyme with fierceness and to get with the saliva. Everlast bringing teh punney.

I think I may need this album. Like a brutha needs the bluntz.

Shouldn't that be Come Baby Come, not Come Back Baby?

I only ticked Dream Warriors because the track has a funny name.

it is a CLASSIC

although i do often conflate it in my head with "my definition (of a boombastic jazz style)"

No Afrika Bambataa? Anyway half of this is pop not rap.

rap is not a specific genre. ALL of it is pop!

People who aren't ticking "Regulate": explain.

The epitome of snore rap. (Yeah, it's got good moments, but I'm not ticking it, as punishment.)

Didn't he have a collaboration with Elton John in the charts recently, or have I gone mad? Certainly the latter seems more likely.

Also "I'll see you when you get there, see you when you get there, see you when you get the-e-re" springs to mind. But not the title of the track in question.

'Fantastic Voyage' is the best Coolio track. I remember '1,2,3,4 Sumpin' New' as well - more p-funk-sampling fun.

a little Wu-Tang (together or solo), Quest or Cypress Hill on here would've been nice.

Ice-T

From: [identity profile] chezghost.livejournal.com
Ice-T - most over-rated rapper ever? I don't think he made a decent track after 1990 and even then I'm being very generous to 'You Played Yourself' and 'Superfly 1990' which are also probbably rub. I dunno if I the Body Count stuff is REALLY that good, but maybe he has a decent album track lurking somewhere. Funny that he didn't get a late 90s/early 00s injection of cool like many of his peers (LL, Ice Cube).

I was going to do this poll and now Kat's stolen my thunder.

Boom Shack A Lack is a work of godlike genius but has no place here. Regulate is probably the best single of the 90s.

Beastie Boys are currently in the lead

I'm puzzled by...

From: (Anonymous)
...the lack of love for D'Angelo's Brown Sugar. It's not rap by any definition, but it sure is good. As for Ice-T, I'd maintain that OG (1991) is his best album all the way through, although Power has the better moments. I think he's now rather underrated, which is due to a) his TV career and b) the fact that his rapping style seems ever further from what rap has become. Finally, can I suggest that this compliation has strange lack of Tone Loc? - Mark M
