THOSE TICKS JUSTIFIED

'The Power Of Love' = classic powerballad, impossible to make bad
'Misled' = INSANE DISCO STOMPER
'Think Twice' = another classic powerballad!
'Falling Into You' = genuinely lovely and trip-hoppy - actually understated for once! like a precursor to that one good Dido song
'All By Myself' = pop culture colossus due to B Jones, also has that one moment where all the instrumentation drops out and she hits THAT NOTE and it feels like the world has screeched to a halt on its axis and been sent spinning the other way
'It's All Coming Back To Me Now' = eight-minute Steinman-penned epic which out-Meatloafs Meatloaf
'My Heart Will Go On' = erm I don't HATE it

power of love and all by myself NOT ticked due to inferiority of the versions, too histrionic for moi i'm afraid.

also, why can't i place misled? i was wondering if she *ever* did any proper uptempo numbers (MHWGO-bosh remix not counting, obv) and misled seems to be the answer...

'Misled' is indeed the answer - I hope someone has a copy so all poptimists can hear it, it really is poptastic. "If you think you're in mah hair! You've been seriously! (dramatic whisper) Misled!"

I think she did a disco-bosh cover of 'I Drove All Night' at some point too :o

Most definitely. I contemplated ticking 'Pour Que Tu M'Aimes Encore' to give it its full title, because it was just about bearable as Celine songs go. But then again... nil points pour Mademoiselle Dion.

Pour Que Tu M'Aimes Encore is being unfairly overlooked here - it's a great song, and she sounds like she's actually emoting in the right places rather than all over the place in lots of her English stuff. She works with different songwriters and different producers on her French stuff, and it's much better for it. Have people just forgotten what it sounds like?

I have never heard 'I'm Alive' and am content to imagine that it is a cover of Stretch'n'Vern, ie "I'M ALIVE THE MAN WITH THE SECOND FACE" etc. Which probably means I should go back and tick it!

Justine Henin-Hardenne's favourite singer is Celine! Actually a lot of tennis players seem to like her.

No, it's not the song by the Temptations nor the one by the Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose. But it is rather fun, a reggae dancetrack, she breaks into patois, sticks up for the sisters, tells the men they'd better not abuse their women if they don't want a payback.

I think this is pretty much spot-on!

or at least think about WHY they are hated, who they are hated by, and whether your kneejerk hatred of them is inherited from critics or actually justified (and in C's case it is justified for many of her songs, but she should certainly not be a totemic hate figure)

I hated 'My Heart Will Go On' as much as anyone else but eventually felt that her voice on the enormous tidal wave (not iceberg) of overblown orchestral bombast when it builds up is so impressive from a technical point of view that now i cannot help but sort of admire it. CURSESES.

Which is ironic, since that sentence is the best thing that Steven King has ever written.*

King has never actually heard 'Who Let The Dogs Out' before and imagines it more as a 'Release The Hounds'/Ride Of The Valkyries style affair.

baby baby baby

Selected highlights :

- The video to It's All Comin' Back To Me, falling tree kills motorcyclist, even Meatloaf would've been proud
- The guitar solo in Think Twice
- Falling Into You (Falling Into You)

I don't remember The Power Of Love, it's neither the Frankie Goes To Hollywood nor the Jennifer Rush song is it ? Is it HUEY LEWIS ?

Fiery Dance-Floor Demon

Fiery dance-floor demon forced to make her living doing power ballads. Well, don't know if she's forced - she probably likes 'em fine - but she won't give up on the dancefloor stomp, always puts 'em on her album, even when they almost never ever get released as singles.

I could have gotten up to ten ticks, but nonetheless THIS IS A REALLY LOUSY LIST AND IN NO WAY REPRESENTATIVE OF WHAT SHE'S LIKE AT HER BEST. I blame the record companies. I blame the fans. I blame the zeitgeist. I blame the iceberg. (Good song, sung well until she decides to outcrash the ship.)

Search: "Reveal," "When the Wrong One Loves You Right," "Unison," "Drove All Night" (I'll take any of those over anything I've heard by the Sugababes or Girls Aloud), "I Don't Know" (her best ballad, smoldering and heartbroken, with a disconcerting counterrhythm underneath), anything produced by Ric Wake (who, prior to Celine, unleashed Taylor Dayne on the world).

Destroy: Half of this list.

Perhaps she has to put a disco stomper on her albums because other popstars have to put a ballad on their album full of disco stormers?

Lots of her songs were given boshy remixes that went down a storm (in gay clubs at least). Because you love me was infinitely better in remixed form, and I ticked it for that alone.
