Last week we saw that 1986 was a smashing year for number ones, with Diana Ross, Falco and Europe all getting 30 ticks or more. However Queen Madge reigned supreme with 36 ticks for Papa Don't Preach. Now intrepid poll-tickers, cast your minds back.... It's 1958 and rock'n'roll is in full swing! OR IS IT?

I'm sorry but that's utter rub! Hoots Mon sounds like a thousand other big band numbers that ppl had been doing for 20 years before this. I'm sure I could even find one with a Scotsman shouting over it.

It doesn't matter what which sounds like, we're not talking about "more original", we're talking about better. Big swing band numbers and rock n roll are both 50+ years old now so there's no cred points to be gained by pretending one's better than the other.

Rock 'n' roll is way better than big swing band numbers. (But there's way better rock 'n' roll and way better Elvis than "Jailhouse Rock," and I've not heard "Hoots Mon.")

It's also true that nothing sounding like Hoots Mon had been No.1 before this - well not since 1952, anyway. "Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White" is closest, but still a lot tamer.
