An easy win last time for Madonna and barely less so for Kylie - so far we've not had a really close pop star fite - maybe these will provide it. It's an ALL-BOY SPECIAL with pop's most laconic star facing off against an indie icon, and a second contest between two stars who may not immediately yell 'pop' at you...

I nommed Hank. You know how comedy bores always go "Oh, Graham Chapman/Peter Cook achieved everything they wanted to, so just spent the next 20 years of their life drinking themselves to death. Hank Williams managed to drink himself to death after reaching the pinnacle of music in about three months. He was kind of the first Pop Star as we appreciate it these days (maybe Cab Calloway was actually first, though?). He died young, which is POP, and his songs were about TEENAGE STUFF LIKE TAKING YOUR GIRL OUT TO DINNER and KILLING YOURSELF, which is also pop.

Anyone whom doesn't have any Hank in their life needs to get dumped, buy some bourbon, and then ask me for recommendations.

Jarvis was a great performer and was often very entertaining on TV, so I think he was a great pop star.

I love Mick and Hank comparably, but Mick seems closer to my idea of a pop star, so he edges it.

I get the impression that Chris's musical tastes (lots of dance music, espcially of the Italian variety) help to balance out some of Neil's more arty pretensions, without which the PSBs wouldn't be as great pop stars as they are.

Making an arse of yourself >>> not making an arse of yourself (this is the indie position perhaps, but still true).

i wish i'd nominated Ron Mael now.

Jarvis ISN'T a fanny, this is the problem! he talks nothing but sense all the time and he wrote great lyrics. it's really hard to criticise him for anything other than being the epitomy of Indie Fop pin-up if you think that can only ever be a bad thing. but after initially thinking he seemed like too much of a pretentious tosser the first time i saw the videos for 'Do You Remember The First Time' and 'Common People' i ended up hearting him as much as anyone else (except perhaps those crazy Japanese girls).

Oh come on Jarvis is fantastic and not a fanny IN ANY WAY. I might go as far as to say Jarvis > better than Pulp.

Who nominated Chris Lowe anyway?

I think what seals it for Jarvis is that he can stand out on his own as a pop star i.e. it often felt as if Jarvis WAS Pulp and the rest of the band didn't matter. Whereas Lowe on his own would just be a pretty great dance music anorak producer bloke like Vince Clarke (who is borderline genius but you don't think of him as an actual pop star do you?)
