I Have Never Heard Entire Albums By These Bands Who Have Excellent Songs On Late '70s/Early '80s European K-Tel-Style Compilations

Do any of them have albums worth hearing? The world wants to know, or at least I do.

The "I" who's saying this is [livejournal.com profile] chuckeddy. He has a feeling some folks on [livejournal.com profile] poptimists might be interested in this and might have input for it too, either there or here. The thread starts with these two compilations, but there are many more lists, contributed by Xhuxk and others, and quite a few YouTube imbeds:

Double Dancing (Record 2) (K-Tel Finland 1983)

GARY LOW "I Want You"
FREEZ "Pop Goes My Love" (have only otherwise heard his/their electro-hop classic "I.O.U." before)
STYLE "Dark Eyes"
BLACK LACE "Superman" (talked dance steps, sounds like an English version of Claudio Chechetto's Italian early '80s "Gioca-Jouer," or maybe the other way around)
CAROLA HĂGGVIST "Hunger"
DAVID GRANT "Love Will Find A Way" (Linx-style early '80s Brit soul I guess?)

Disco Fever (K-Tel U.K. 1977)

BROTHERHOOD OF MAN "Angelo" (Second-tier ABBAs, right?)
MERI WILSON "Telephone Man" (top 20 hit in U.S.!)
SMOKIE "It's Your Life" (superstars in this world, I guess. Lots of hits on lots of these compilations; "Living Next Door To Alice" was their only U.S. top 40)

Several ace pop songs from Sweden are being released in the UK in the next few months, so I thought I should introduce you Poptimists to them in preparation.

First up is Swingfly, who you may recognise from his work with Teddybears Sthlm on the brilliant Hey Boy, and on the intro to Robyn's last album. He's a rapper but a very poppy one. Singing That Melody is my favourite of his songs, so I'm really excited that it's coming out here in a few months. I also recommend Winner and Something's Got Me Started.

And just for fun, here's the Korean version of the same song. Quite strange!

Velvet is a Europop singer in the vein of September. Her career began with a fun cover of Electric Avenue, but her first album was just average. However, the singles from her soon to be released follow-up have been excellent so far, and she is going to be launched in the UK with the best of them, Chemistry. Other great songs are Déja Vu and Fix Me. No video can be found, so here's the audio:

Chemistry (Radio Version) - Velvet

The Eurodance anthem True Believer by the legendary E-Type, written by the ever-dependable Max Martin, won't be new to any readers of Dirrrty Pop, cos I've been banging on about it for years. It was my 4th favourite song of 2007, in fact, and I've been impatiently awaiting it's UK release ever since I first heard it. I even managed to get some of my unpoptastic friends into it, although ironically my one Eurovision-loving friend hated it! I just realised he looks like E-Type must have at age 20, so perhaps that is the explanation. It's been receiving lots of plays on Clubland TV on Sky, and it will be released by AATW soon. Hopefully.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think. Will they be successful?

Sucky?

Eh. Sounds an awful lot like Kelly Clarkson singing a Dr. Luke hook. Not nearly as disastrous as I was expecting, but also can't really bring myself to care about it. It's such a meaningless exercise in sounding edgy three years ago. Any thoughts?

(Meanwhile at Offnotesnotes I'm still complaining about the stupid narratives that the cultcha commentaters have spun about "My December" from most viewpoints, since "third album departure" really does a disservice to what she's been doing since Breakaway, which is the one that everyone claims is so accessible. I refuse to believe that these people have listened to the second half of that album! (Even "Behind These Hazel Eyes" or "Because of You"...it's just not the lightest stuff out there.)

So! The most popular tracks from the lower reaches of the chart in December were by Scooter Quo (38.9%) and Lil Wayne (33.3%). Also, Mr Az was DISQUALIFIED.

More interesting, hopefully, are the...
collected results for 2008! )
