Drawing heavily on that discussion we had on Poptimists a week or two ago, here's my latest Pitchfork column. I wanted something straightforward after last month's reaction-free one (which I'm still quite pleased with) and I appear instead to have accessed my inner Nick Hornby.

All bets are off for this one - who will be victorious in the eyeliner battle of the century?

The rules have changed. Instead of rating each band out of 10 over each category, you must pick which band you would rate highest in that category. If you can't decide which band is best at that particular area of pop, tick the BOTHERD box!

Exactly how the results of this poll and the previous pop trumps will be converted into a card game are being kept under wraps for now - come along to Poptimism on June 7th if you want to find out!

I'm not sure whether this is kosher, but in the midst of a discussion about Kanye West's concert tour and his status as POPSTAR/not, Lex suggested I float the idea here to see what people thought. I honestly tried to come up with something concise, but the following piece spewed itself forth instead. Apologies. Plus, at the end of it, I'm still not quite sure what Kanye is.

Kanye West: Rock Star, Hipster, Rainbow Brite, Anime, Avril-Lite? )

This was supposed to try and figure out if Kanye was a pop star or not, but it kind of got away from me. If rock stars like Mick and Britney and Iggy don’t give a shit, how do pop stars relate to their audiences? Does Kanye fit the template? If not, what is he?

Also for your reading pleasure, platitudes from Kanye's free self-help book )
