If you were a nefarious but loving computer with network access and privileges -- *either direction* -- to every piece of operating machinery on the planet, and you just dropped into an excellent mood or revelation, which feel-good song would you force the entire world to listen to on all audio devices simultaneously?

And why this song?

(Keep in mind that you, the computer, have the ability to temporarily twist the physics of earth such that the entire world is temporarily experiencing a sunny mid-day ALL AT ONCE!)

My choice: Joakim's 'To The Smiling Sun' remix of Air's "Surfing on a Rocket"

I've been listening to the song non-stop the past day or so. Most prominently, it was my song of choice as background music for playing the iPod-compatible game PEGGLE! The Joakim/Air track is clearly one of my favorite slices of electronic pop in the 2000s. There's just consistent warmth and goose bump generation listening to the entirety of this.

There's not much in the way of lyrics aside from the vocoded "Surfin'onna'rock-it" phrase repeated often enough to sound like a textured instrument, and some disembodied girl counting at some point in a particularly psychedelic bridge. However, there's nothing DIFFICULT about this track either. It could not be more mid-tempo, although it serves a purpose in low or high activity whether in a work or leisure context.

(ugh I try to avoid this 'm' word, but) The most cogent factor is the "magic" in this song. Each second of this track is bursting with color emanating and hovering in any benign pattern you wish to imagine -- no drugs needed.

PS I've been without sleep for the past two days. Apologies.

So have it. One feel-good song you subject to the world to on Earth's Sunny Moment! Go!

POPTIMISM!

It's the first Saturday of the month this week, which means - it's a Poptimism night! 8pm - 2am in the Cross Kings, at Kings Cross, with your regular DJs will be joined by guest6 [livejournal.com profile] catsgomiaow, who promises a voyage of exploration into a bygone decade, alongside the usual parade of tunes big and semi-big and BIG-TO-BE.

Also! The rumoured return of CAKE HOUR (though I'm not sure where these cakes will be coming from - I will be trying my hand at some again tho)

Also also! I have made a MUXTAPE for Poptimism, a mix of new tunes we might play and a few old-time gems. If this is your first time using Muxtape, it's a streaming mixtape web app - you just click on the first track (or wherever you want to start) then sit back and let them play (I wrote a bit about it here). MOAR Muxtape action coming later.

I feel there's been a bit of a gender bias to these posts so far, so this week I am going to alienate a portion of the poptimist audience and do BOYS WITH GUITARS. (Nb these all run towards the emoish/pop-punky side of boyswithguitarness, so... at least you're spared the nindie type thereof?)

Smak - Hallanvaara (2004)
The only uploads of the official video on youtube are embed-disabled, but here's an embeddable live version for the lazy:

It's essentially a waltzy power-ballad lullaby! With STRINGS and MELODRAMA! It is also really, really pretty. (Second single from debut album "Sic Transit".)

51 Koodia - Kahleet (2005)

Loud and riffy but most importantly HOOKY AS HELL. That chorus! Quite, quite awesome, if you like that sort of thing.

(Was the lead single for their second album, but really rose to prominence as a result of its inclusion on a movie soundtrack.)

Ripsipiirakka - Ota mut (2003)

Okay, okay, I know ska-punk covers of 80s pop hits is like the oldest hat there is, but this (mind my bias) is a really exceptional example! :D It's all lively and honestly engaging, and kinda poptastic! It also follows the old, old Finnish pop tradition of (often very, very loosely translated) Finnish-language versions of foreign hits, which somehow makes it even more win++. (From a themed covers ep of the same title.)

Next week volume will be another primer; to that end, a teaser:
